| 25 Sep 2005 | Jennifer Russo | I love how much contrast you achieved in this--it really makes him look glossy. It's very realistic, too, and even though I'm not really a big fan of realism, I can tell that this required a lot of skill and talent to do... Great work! Emma JC Nilsson replies: "Thank you for your kind comment! Realism was my goal with this one, so I'm happy you wrote that. =^_^=" | |
| 25 Sep 2005 | Sarah J. Kinder | Not original - but beautifully done!!! Emma JC Nilsson replies: "Thanks! ^_^, I'll do something original later." | |
| 25 Sep 2005 | M. Amber 'Goshawk' Bayles | Wow! The anatomy is great! What cat and bird did you base him on? Emma JC Nilsson replies: "Golden eagle and lion, actually. Though I modified the ears a little." | |
| 5 Oct 2005 | Frida Leijonborg | wooooow....realism indeed. gryphons seems so fun to draw! maybe I should try that sometime. yes, I think I will...*mental note to self* you did an amazing job on the coal, personally I think it's damn hard to make it look good. o.O Coal is NOT one of my favourite mediums, no siree...>_< Glad some people got it down so well though. *hint hint* ^^ Emma JC Nilsson replies: "I just find coal easy for some reason. I did this kind of fast and without any trouble. But watercolor is hard. Really hard... -_- Do let me know if you get a griffin up!" | |
| 21 Dec 2005 | Mandy E. Burnham | *Ahem* not to point out the obvious but this is a stunning piece. I believe that a little bit of the animal's spirit has been captured in his eyes. Very well done. I stand in awe of this wonderful work. Brava! Emma JC Nilsson replies: "Thank you for your kind comment! I hope you can see his pride and strength in those eyes... =^.^=" | |
| 17 Feb 2006 | Emilie Katter | oh wow this is amazing! I love how the fur and feathers blend together, and how real the eye looks. The only pointer I can think of is that he's missing an ear o.o Emma JC Nilsson replies: "*lol* You're right about the ear... it should probably be visible. When I do silhouettes, I leave out the other side's ears, legs, etc, sometimes on purpouse, sometimes I just forget. ^^, Don't know which reason it was this time... Thanks for commenting!" | |
| 16 May 2007 | Anonymous | I found this site by luck while page'in through google and this site had the first decent gryphons so far. I love the title ^_^ I would kill to be able to do my gryphons' feathers like that...Much less the realistic detail of the eye *Sits at computer in envy* Emma JC Nilsson replies: "I was found on Google? Sweet! =^.^= Have you tried coal? You should envy the medium, not the artist. =) I swear, fur and feathers always look more realistic when you use coal for some reason." | |
| 10 Oct 2007 | Heather | WOW... just... WOW! very very very beautiful job capturing the expression, lots of free spirit and strength in them! beautiful shading, makes him look practically 3D! excellent job on the proportions! *lol* his eye looks ready to blink at me! i have tried my hand at drawing griffins, and, while they aren't the worst ones in the world, yours definitely blew mine waaaay out of the water! well done! keep up the gorgeous gorgeous work! (continues to rave on and on...) Emma JC Nilsson replies: "It's all thanks to my coal pen. All hail the coal pen... That, and studying photos. But I also think I had a bit of luck with the eye. It is SOOO easy to overwork and ruin a pic when drawing in coal. I did it a bit with the feathers at the back of the head, but I restrained myself with the eye and the beak." | |
