SciFi and Fantasy Art: Fire dragon

I know, he doesn't look like your typical fire dragon - rather cute, in fact. He's a retiring type, rather shy and socially inept, which isn't helped by his uncontrollable tendency to set light to the carpet when embarrassed. As you can imagine, this little problem is a bit of a vicious spiral and leads to very few party invites.

Drawn when I was experimenting with different types of dragon wing - these have quills which act like the battens of a sail to stop the wing collapsing during a steep glide or dive. The leading edge is sheathed in feathery scales which give it a better profile. I don't know what the winglets on his legs are for - steering maybe?

Felt tip pen on miscellaneous paper.

Sounds reasonable. And interesting.

Bat wings being more manoeuvrable than bird wings is something new to me, though there might be something to it. I did wonder how the way swallows (_Hirundo rustica_, to avoid misunderstandings 2 fly reminded me of bats sometimes.

Laziness or not, I love the style. And the eye, too. Beautiful eye. I think it reminds me of some head restorations of Heterodontosaurus I saw, but then I'm a palaeo-geek 10

Great anatomy, though I'm not sure I understand the wings.

:-) Catriona E.J. Lindsay replies: "They're structured pretty much like a pterosaur wing, but with the membrane stiffened with long quills or ribs made of something like keratin. Bat wings are more manoeuvrable than bird wings but tend to collapse when diving - and bats don't soar. So for a soaring dragon you need a wing which is stiffened so it behaves a bit more like a feathered wing. I've also played with the same idea with several finger bones, but this one only has one along the leading edge, like a pterosaur."

Aww! I want him!
I love your style, how you outline basic stuff and leave the color to speak for the rest. The scales are awesome and he's SO CUTE!

:-) Catriona E.J. Lindsay replies: "Thanks! I reckon my style comes from laziness - I can't be bothered to shade everything!"

OH, he is so cool...he looks like he should come from Thailand or summat...i know he’s adorable, but there is also a sense of majesty in his stance, i think!

He’s so cute! I love the warm colors. What did you use for coloring?

:-) Catriona E.J. Lindsay replies: "Coloured felt tip pens; just a packet of kids’ ones from a supermarket!"
