SciFi and Fantasy Art: Water Faerie

I've developed quite a love of faeries lately, and I especially like the idea of elemental faeries. The one thing I get sick of is water faeries with mermaid tails, (I've only ever seen one that i actually liked) so I decided to draw one without one. I'm not sure why I chose to do this in black and white, possibly because I haven't done a picture this way in some time, I do plan on doing a colour version at some point. General's graphite pencils 4H, 2H, and HB on Academie 8.5x11 sketch pad paper. Hue adjusted on HP Image Zone.

ooh, wow. So pretty. I like this picture a lot. I like the faintness of it, like she might disappear if I got too close, and the shading is excellent

:-) Matthew W. Gonzales replies: "Thank youo very much. I've been meaning to get around to doing some more b&w lately... haven't had much chance though... I do have a charcoal request from someone coming up soon, lol."

wow nice wings and pose. You do very well with shadows *stares like a retard* and she DOES look like she will disappear at any moment.

:-) Matthew W. Gonzales replies: "Well I can assure you that she won't."

Nice character piece Matthew! I like the concept and your shading is much better on this black & white than in your full color pieces, your proportions are looking good as well. Something to think about for next time, lighten the hair and soften the hair's edges. This would give the figure better balance, keep the intensity in the eyes and not distract from the nice, soft, flowing lines of the body and wing elements. Long dark hair is nice and could work if it was flowing down her back and between the wings which would create a nice, defining contrast to the wings and still allow for a visual balance. Still a nice piece though.

:-) Matthew W. Gonzales replies: "Thank you very much! I couldn't help it with the hair, I had to draw it floating, lol. But yes, I can see what you mean. I'm thinking about working more in black and white soon. It's a lot faster than colour, lol"

Stunning line, stunning texture, stunning... wow. This has got to be one of my favourites of the stuff in your gallery.

:-) Matthew W. Gonzales replies: "I have to remind myself on occasion that it still exists, lol"

The 'wings' remind me of a William Blake etching...odd little creature. [restrains one of her own fairies by the scruff of the neck to prevent it eating the water-fae] Will you be doing a fire/earth one?

:-) Matthew W. Gonzales replies: "Maybe someday. Hard to tell what I'll be drawing anytime right now, lol. I'm glad you like it though."
