Mar is a space pirate, but she didn't start out that way. She was born a powerful seer and telepath of the Nandren race. Nandrens are naturally immune to poison and drugs, including painkillers. She was educated in an ancient order to be a priestess. The order had many strict rules that they had followed for centuries. Shortly after Mar became a full priestess, she fell in love. Not against the rules, although frowned upon. Unfortunately, having sex is against the rules. She made love with her beloved and the order was outraged. They inserted a special pin in the base of her skull that prevents her from using her powers. She still gets visions but she can't see them- they just give her horrendous headaches. Then they stripped her of her title, gave her the name Mar and sold her into slavery. They also used their telepathic influence to get her lover arrested for a murder he did not commit. He was sent to a maximum security prison. She was sold to a bordello that normally uses drugs to subdue and/or incite its slaves. But since Mar is Nandren, she was immune to everything. She did not submit for she was determined to rescue her beloved. So she was transferred to a bordello that caters to those that like to cause pain. Most of her scars are from her time there- which I will not describe in detail. Suffice it to say that after an unfortunate incident with a client it was decided that she would be more suitable as a gladiator slave. So she was sold to a gladiator academy that trained her along with several other female slaves. She excelled at the violent sport and soon gained celebrity status. Anyway, she eventually managed to break her bonds and kill her owner while on a spaceship en route to a tournament. She freed the other female gladiators with her, earning their undying loyalty. They took over the ship and went to the prison where her lover was. Only a few days before they got there, he was stabbed in the back and died. (By the way almost ten years have passed since she last saw him). Mar suspects that the order had something to do with his murder but there is nothing she can do about it. Without her powers she cannot stand against them. So she becomes a pirate, seeing as how she's already wanted by the law and has a loyal crew of gladiators who would lay down their lives for her. There's more to the story but I'm tired of writing.
