SciFi and Fantasy Art: Please Don't Feed the Artist

"Welcome to our latest Earth exhibit, the artists. The artist is a subspecies of humans, the third most widespread animal of the beta-class planet Earth. They are tolerated by the rest of the species, and sometimes encouraged. Artists do not  contribute the survival of the humans. However, they produce 'works of art'. These range from pigmented cloth to preserved feacal matter. Artists are not a threatened species.

All zoo visitors are reminded not to feed the exibits"

This picture stems from two main ideas. Firstly the idea of the 'starving artist' and how aliens might view us. The zoo location is another matter. I jokingly think of my art class as a bit of a zoo; it contains so many fascinating people.

The sign on the cage is based on crop circle marks and can be 'translated' as "don't feed the animals". Also in the back of the cage is a picture saying "home sweet home", proving that aliens have no idea about humans.

hahahaha - classic Shelz! Great concept, and I love the little details, especially the ice cream cone - terrific work - maXine 1

1 Shelz Keast replies: "Thanks a lot Maxine! Those details were a lot of fun and I'm glad they've been noticed."

That“s a great idea, indeed. Reminds me of a painting in an old book i read when i was a child... what would the little one say? "Look, mom... it must be sort of intelligent. It“s able to use a tool...heard that at school mom... now, can we go see the bad biting monsterbeasts? Pleeease?"

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "Heheh, hadn't thought about what the child might have said. Thanks for the input."

Haha! This is great!! I love the idea!! Keep it up!

I`m hoping for a MC for this!

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "It's not to be, not a surprise though. I hope to get this coloured some time though- maybe by Christmas."

I absolutely LOVE this! Brilliantly thought out. The little details are fantastic, I don't know why it didn't get a mods choice.

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "Maybe because it's only line art. I *am* colouring it, but it's going to take a while with study and work. (Also don't like the colours at the moment, so I'll completely redo it anyway)"

Absolutely hillarious. Who would have known, third most widespread... There are more uf us than I thought it would be then. This image is really spot on, the whole starving artist business, alien views and also a bit how the zoo's looked like in the late 19th century all the animals crammed up in tiny cages. Got to love the "don't feed the animals" sign. Great work. 1

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "Thanks for the compliment. The Victorian zoos are the sterotypical zoo. They are the ones most commonly featured in children's books. The fasions just kinda followed. As for being the third most abundant species, well, I made that up. Something of a guess. We're probably fairly low on the list, bellow a lot of bugs and other such small 'insignifigant' creatures."

At least the poor artists have got some easels and art materials
however what a picture
so funny
the way the aliens are smartly dressed like on an outing
well drawn too

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "I figured that the aliens make an attempt at recreating a 'natural' environment, so they stuck a few token artsupplies in with the artists. Note that the artists aren't using then and don't look teribbly happy."

aw that looks brutal!!! but it’s so true, it’s exactly the same thing we’re doing to the animals... i’ve seen a reversed picture like that with animals, but never with aliens... this is cool! would do great in colours, too, i’d say2!!!

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "It probably would look great in colours. I just need to rescan it. It’ might go on the to do list. There’s already rather a lot on it..."
7 May 2008:-) Zach I Umsted
Reminds me of Slaughter House Five.

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "Don’t know that one."
