SciFi and Fantasy Art: Lava Dragon

A lava dragon emerging from a pool of, surprise surprise, lava. It doesn't have wings because, by nature, wings tend to have a large surface area to volume ratio. This means they would dry or cool much quicker than rest of the dragon and crack and fall off. So having wings isn't a very usefull trait for the dragon.

First time doing lava like skin, and amazingly it's been succesful (this was actually the main goal of the picture). Can't say so about the actuall lava, but meh.

First comment YEA!!!!! okay, the detail and coloring on this thing must have taken you forever, very good

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "It did take a while to do the lava of the dragon, but it’s not that hard; just really repedative. More time spent trying to figure out how to do lava without any reference pictures."

Perhaps you should have treated the lava more like (very thick) water. Unless it is flowing very sluggishly. But the dragons’ skin is very lively. Almost as if it were made of lava itself.12

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "I did want the dragon’s skin to be made of lava. Treating the lava as sluggish water wouldn’t have worked: I’d still have needed to figure out what that looked like."

You’ve captured that deep glow of lava in both the dragon and the lava flow. The dragon’s skin is great.

Also wanted to say that the dragon’s head is original, massive and strong.

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "Thanks there."

The dragon has a very glow, ember appearence, like those flaming wood chips at the bottom of a bon fire. It certainly does give it a hot aura.

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "Oh the coals. I never really thought about that. "
