SciFi and Fantasy Art: Sea Snake

Speed paint: A merman with a sea snake tail rather than the traditional fish tail. The markings on the tail are based on either an actuall sea snake or a land snake from Arnham Land, Northern Australia. I think that both snakes might have pretty similar markings. Trivial though. I like how he came out.

This picture is awesome ! there is a simplicity yet it’s a complex image, if you get my point, and you’ve really pulled off the body language, you are a really skilled artist.

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "Oh thank you so much. I like what you’ve said."

This is really cool! I like the motion and the rather "unfinished" look to him. Very original idea!

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "Started off as a sketch in my Anthropology book first (a good judge of how engaging a lecture is is to count the number and detail of sketches in the margines). I like the motion too, main reason for not ’finishing’ him off."

Saw this on Saturday.... but only now have I got around to commenting.... because since sighting this quite evocative ’speed drawing’ the following has been stuck in my head...."whoa ho ho hoooo... de de de de de de deh.... whoa ho ho hooooo.... de de de de de de deh.... everybody was kung fu fighting.... ha!.... those kicks were fast as lightning heh!..... In fact was a little bit frightening, but they fought with expert timing" (copyright Wang Chung of course)..... ah, now I am ’really’ showing my age... great movement and mood - maXine 1 (and now hopefully this song will now depart....)

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "Ooookaay....Haven’t a clue where that came from (but then not a kung-fu movie fan). Sorry about getting a song stuck in your head. It might be better than the Captain Planet theme. It’s really amazing how a bunch of Uni students can suddenly start singing random stuff from childhood (okay it was for Clean Up Australia Day- but still)"

An original idea, even as a speed painting, this is good. I like how his tail sort of fades, suggesting a murkiness and depth to the water.

:-) Shelz Keast replies: "I’ve seen some really good speed paints around. Some just make you go ’how the ???’ can someone do that in 50 mins. Mine took less than an afternoon (I finished of two other pictures that arvo too, but they’d already been worked on for a couple of days). Tail-fading is nice and easy in photoshop."
