SciFi and Fantasy Art: Encounter I

Before 1998 - Pencil drawing - 44cm x 31cm

This is the first of a small series of 'encounters' between a human and a dragon. Initially it was inspired by the fantasy story I'm writing, but it is not really an illustration. I just like to draw dragons, and to experiment with different forms of them. (This form I don't like so much anymore...) And I find especially the combination of one small human with one big dragon fascinating.

wow, its a pretty cool style of dragon! Is that person wearing a turban? 10

:-) Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "No it's just the hair style. Thanks again for all your comments, Frances!"

You are definitely a master of scale and proportion. From teeny tiny songgryphons to BIG IMPOSING dragons, you do it all very well.

:-) Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Thank you Roxanne! Well, drawing in just one scale would be too boring, wouldn't it? ;-)"

I really like this one too, don’t know why. I like the sketchness style to it and the movement of the dragon. I wish the scan was better. But really enjoy this one nice dragon, he might eat that human for supper...>;-)

:-) Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "*g* Yeah, he probably woudn't even have to chew... Though I doubt he's eat that man so easily. Else it would be strange how confident the guy seems. I see somewhat like a negotiation in the picture."

Woah! nice head on the dragon! REALLY cool! You know... I never think of dragons that big... But i think that's just me. after reading stories about dragons and what they do... I makes sense for them to be that large.

:-) Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Depends on what kind of dragons you think of, I guess. I like those gigantous ones very much. But I also like tiny pet-like dragons. ;-) Do you know the leaf dragons from Michael E. Waters? They are a cool idea as well."

I like the uneven-ness of the mouth .. Its really really neat..

:-) Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Hmm. I don't really remember what I had in mind drawing it like that. I think it should be some kind of lichens growing on him. "

Dra...Dragon Amazing I love dragons... theres not much a can say the amazinlyness (just made the word up... I think)of the picture makes me typless and speechless.

2 Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Thanks a lot, Bryan!"

I like the dragon, he is unique, not the typical kind of dragon! And he has personality

1 Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Thank you Christel! I agree, he has personality. But nowadays I don't like this kind of dragon. My sister always said he's too fat. I think she finally convinced me. ;-)"

i really love the head of the dragon, though maby the claws could be bigger and more defined FANTASTIC

:-) Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "The claws are very sketchy, that's right. Though I don't feel they should be bigger, just more carefully drawn."

Oooh! I really like the head of this dragon! Very spiky and cat like! Very nice! The nose is good too, I liked how it looks, the way the nostrils are. Yep, I know, I'm wierd! 2

:-) Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Thank you, Marika. Actually, when I come to think of it, I always imagine dragons with many cat-like attributes. Strange. After all, they should be reptiles and not mammals ... Maybe it is just because I am such a fan of both. ;-)"
