SciFi and Fantasy Art: Breaking the Circle

January 2004 - Oil paint - 48cm x 62cm

My contribution to a V-day art show in Greeley, Colorado this february.
It's inspired by a 'selfdefence for women' book I read a few years ago. That book was about breaking with the victim sheme and finding one's own strength. One possible technique described there was to imagine to turn into some kind of strong soul animal. I was impressed by the example described there, about a woman who ran into one of those threatening 'dark-alley-encounters' and who drove the strangers away by pretending (mainly to herself) to be a tigress defending her kittens.

You can buy prints of this painting here. Or visit Ellen Million Graphics; she also sells lots of nifty stuff with this motive.

I love this picture! I LOVE big cats! I can't believe you haven't gotten Mods choice for this!

:-) Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Thank you a lot! Well, it's always a matter of taste of the mod that processes the ticket whether something gets chosen. "

Jeezus.. I love it. *Tears* I love how they're in the same stance.. and I love the... everything. I know it has nothing to do with it's original purpose, but the picture fits perfectly to an Anthro character I have.. can I use this pic? Please!?

:-) Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Depends on what you understand by "using" it. You may very well save it for your own personal, non-commercial use. If you want to show it anywhere in public, though - e.g. on a webpage - you'll need to give properly credits to me and provide a link back to my gallery. For everything else you should contact me by e-mail and describe what's in your mind. Thank you very much for your comment! I'm glad you like this picture so much! 2"

OH MY GOD!!!! I LOVE IT! the story behind it makes it even better!

:-) Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Thank you very much. That background story makes it less fantasy and more connected to real life. Maybe that's the strength in it. "

I don't know if you've ever seen the kids film 'The Road to ElDorado'? There's a bit on that where the evil holy man links his soul with that of a stone Jaguar and his actions are mirrored by this statute and ity breaks out and he causes havok before being stopped by the heros aww (well, it is a kiddy film lol). But it remeinded me of that at first.

But then read the back story and wow- so much better. Strength of women. Great idea! So very cool!

I love the ghost effect. I actually saw the woman first, then the ghost so that was like 'shocker!' Amazing. I like how dark it looks too. Highly effective.

I've rambled long enough lol. Very brilliant picture. *Pats lion*

2 Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Thank you very much, Ruth! I don't know that film. A moving statue of a Jaguar sounds pretty cool, I think. Maybe that would make a good painting as well. 2 Anyway, it was great fun painting this ghost-like tiger."

2 Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Thank you very much. It's just been an update so it won't get a Mod's Choice. "

2 Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Hmm, I don't know that one and haven't found anything by a quick search. Do you have a link?"
