SciFi and Fantasy Art: The Hunter2003 - Pencil drawing - 25cm x 65cm
Uff! Done! I made it! A whole day nothing could stop me until this one was finished, not even my own tiredness. At five o clock in the morning it was done - at last! - and then I was kind of so 'high' that I could'nt go to sleep for at least one hour more. I'm really pleased with it. And I think I stepped a little bit closer to my great idol Royo with this one. By the way, that's the picture, which made my friend mention the psychiatrist... ;-)
Update Oct 2004: Thank you all very much for all those cool title ideas! I think, though, I'll keep 'The Hunter'. I probably got too used to it to change it by now.
You can buy a print of this picture here! :) |

 | | | | | Date | Name | Comment | | | 26 Oct 2004 | Zsófia Blaumann | The first thing that came to my mind. He got her. Trapped as a bird in a cage. Now all he needed to do is to wait for Him. For He would never leave her beloved one in the cold ice to die. Why did he want Him? That is left to your imagination. Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Wow! That's a new idea about the story behind the picture and I like it very much. Indeed, maybe the hunter isn't waiting for his companions after all, he's waiting for his real prey and that angel is just the bait. Thank you very much, Zsófia!" | |
| 11 Jan 2005 | Esther X. Yu | It reminds me of some sci-fi that I must've dreamed up somewhere...where humans realize that the world is filles with magical beings. One by one they're caught and killed, kind of like the holocaust, in an age of destruction. I love your name...lol Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Hahaha, I love yours, too! (It sounds better with your last name ...) Thanks for the comment! That sounds like an interesting idea for a story. Write one about it! ;-)" | |
| 28 Jan 2005 | Chelsea Rhythmn Seydlitz | humans... we suck dont we? HUMAN SUPREMECY BLOWS. that captures it perfectly, that we are practically the only creature to kill our own without having a reason. Seriously... poor widdle angel. *Kills big evil poacher and unlocks chains* And for a good title, would be i think "Free no more" ^.^ just a sudgestion Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Hmmm. In fact, I think even we humans do have a reason when we kill our own. Those reasons just aren't always very ethical or moral. (When animals kill their own their reasons aren't either, by the way.) Anyway, this is no reason not to blaim ourselves for the way we handle this trait and drawing pictures like this one. ;-) Thank you for commenting! " | |
| 25 Apr 2005 | Lord Valineir | Ehh..oO; He reminds me of an Eskimo/Hannibal/SealHunter mixture.. -shrug- It's just me I spose. I like it though. -thumbs up- Nice job. Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Thanks a lot! I don't know what people I thought of when I drew him. I just thought it's very cold where he is and he needs warm clothes..." | |

| 12 Oct 2005 | Alex | Wow!Loving the angle. You could call it broken wings. Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Thank you a lot! I love this picture. Broken Wings sounds good. Though I think I'll stick to the old title by now. *reminds herself to change the description up there* " | |
| 18 Mar 2006 | J Milburn | Were you trying to make some kind of point by having him with a gun and think clothes, and her with nothing? Also, is the angel meant to look sort of, childish? I think this is a stunning picture, I want to know what it means to you... Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "I rather don't reveal what I was aiming for with this picture, since it is so much more interesting to hear, what people see in it themselves. Though I can say that this work really means a lot to me. This one and the piece "The Last Unicorn" are the two pictures I have drawn that are most intense, most emotional, and I just love everything about them, how they turned out technically, how they feel, and especially their ambiguous content. I hope you are not too disappointed. If you like, I'll give you one guess about what it means in my opinion. I'll just tell how close your guess came. And - of course - you can read all my other answers to commerntors. Maybe, in the sum, I have already revealed much more than I wanted. Anyway, thank you very much for your interest in this picture!" | |
| 15 Apr 2006 | J Milburn | No, if you want to keep it to yourself, you keep it there. The first thing I thought was the rather simple idea of the way humans have become. The fact this guy is presumably in either the arctic or the Antarctic rings the bells, as those are places that you think of being destroyed through Global warming. Then there is, as I mentioned, the way that the Angel is completely naked, while the human is in thick clothes, holding a gun. This talked to me about the Human reliance on technology. Also, there is an 'abandoning religion' feel to it, obviously, due to the fact this guy is holding an angel at gun-point. There is the feel that the world is being destroyed for the children, taking the wonderful things and destroying them. OR, in contrast, taking wonderful things and tying them down, where they shouldn't be. Finally, something that really did feel powerful about the picture was that you can see NOTHING of this man. I say man, it could be a woman. They could be of any race. This shows the way that all people are responsible for the destruction and care of the world. What I couldn't work out was why this angel looks so childish... there could be millions of reasons for that, made me think... WAS it intentional? I don't know you, and, when I made this comment, I had only seen this picture of yours. I now intend to look at the rest of your gallery. I may have looked in completely the wrong direction with these thoughts, but, to get this out of me, it must have been an exceedingly good picture, and there is no doubt that it is. Good job, and thanks for the reply! Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Hello again and thank you so much for coming back and sharing your thoughts with me! You're pretty close with the point about humans destroying or rather "taming" everything wonderful in this world. Well, maybe I should cut that down to our nowadays modern, technologically civilised humans, but on the other hand, the tendency lies in all of us, just the methods differ. So anyway, that's one main theme of the picture for me as well, of course. About the childish look of the angel you are wondering about: It was not intentional. Actually myself, I don't even feel that the angel looks childish at all. That might just be my kind-of-cute style of drawing everything. I guess I'll have to practice more to get rid of that look! Oh, another thing: The man with the gun IS a man, he has a moustache. Else I agree about him standing there for any human, the fact that I drew a man there and not a woman shouldn't be overemphasised. Again, thank you very much for your interest in this picture! I cherish especially those comments I get for my dark fantasy pieces. Have a nice Easter holiday! " | |
| 16 Apr 2006 | Dying Messenger | Wow...I don't know what to say. It almost represents humans and life. If you let life take hold of you by the back of the shirt, it will force you to the ground and grind you into the gravel with the heel of its boot until you are just another human stain in the dirt, never to be heard from again. But if you stand up and fight for what's right you can fight your way through life and take *it* by the back of the shirt and force *it* to the ground. And it's like the man (the hunter) is life, and the broken angel is the human beings of earth and life is taking its toll. Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Wow, that's an interesting interpretation of this picture! I have never seen it like that. Thank you very much for sharing your view with me!" | |
