SciFi and Fantasy Art: Tangram Dragon

2003 - CD pieces on black paper - 16cm x 29cm

A very good method to get rid of all those defective CD-Roms ;-)
I changed the title into Tangram Dragon, because I think by now, this looks more like a tangram puzzle than like a mosaik...

* Update November 2005: Ellen Million Graphics sells cool black t-shirts with this shiny piece of a dragon on them!

O my godess, this is stunning. I so am going to try to make these. WOW you are amazing how do you get them to stay on and how do you cut them

:-) Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "I described how I cut them just a few comments above. And I glue them to the paper with just some ordinary glue. As I said: I need to figure out better methods... for both.
Good luck trying! ^_^"

You know....that's a really good idea...*eyes all of her defective CDs*

Anyway, what was the inspiration for doing this? Just your love for dragons?

:-) Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Hm. I don't really remember. I love to try out new techniques and I never did a mosaik until then. Well, I haven't done a REAL mosaik yet, but those CD splinters as tangrams ARE beautiful. And why a dragon, yes I guess that's just my normal obsession. ;-) Thanks for commenting!"

These are SO cool... how big are they in reality? I was thinking they'd make sweet Christmas tree ornaments, on a round ornament with kind of the face cut off one side. Maybe styrofoam covered in black velvet... just getting back from Christmas shopping so you inspired me 2
What a fantastic idea. Maybe I -will- save all those CD's AOL sends me after all!

:-) Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Hihihi, yes, that does no harm after all. I always have had difficulties to throw away those beautiful shining CDs, and now I found one more use for them... (Btw. They are formidable scarecrow substitutions on strawberry-fields...)
Thanks for commenting, Deanna!"

I'm gonna have to try this. Really, I really am. Now... to get my hands on some AOL Cds... muahahaaa...

:-) Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Do it! No mercy! Cut them to pieces! Har har har! ;-)
Good luck! And would you show me what you did with them, pleeeeeeease?"

Gosh I love these things! Really neat...

:-) Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Heh. I should do more of those, considering how many useless CDs I've collected already again..."

Beautiful.

:-) Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "It a good idea to use broken CDs, isn't it?"

Wow it's so pretty.......*steals it and puts it on her tour*
Regards from the Wyvern Tamer

Fantastic!! Awesome idea. You cut the CD's with scissors? 2 I'd probably use chisells on dad's work bench (hold it down with something heavy). If you've scored it enough, then it'd be easy enough to keep it the way you want. At any rate, this sets dragons apart from the other animals out there. Brilliant.

2 Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "I guess it should be easier to cut the CDs on a work bench. I shall try that next time when I want do do such a piece, and if I have access to a work bench then. Thank you!"

This is too cool! So this is made only from CD pieces? That's awsome! How did you cut them to size? Just randomly?

:-) Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Not randomly, I had a sketch and cut the CD-pieces as I needed them."

That's so cool! I want one!! 1

1 Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "*lol* Try it out. And tell me if you find an easy way to cut CDs!"
