SciFi and Fantasy Art: The CollectionSeptember 2004 - Felt-tipped pen - 21cm x 29cm
Another lineart for Ellen Million's dark fantasy colouring book. This is an idea that had been in my head for quite a while. Finally I drew it! And I really like how it turned out. Still I want to do a different and coloured version some day.
The fairies' names from left to right (and up to down): Neraidus lacer (lappet fairy), N. magnificus (magnificent fairy), N. margo (rimmed fairy), N. tropicus (tropical fairy), N. papavereus (poppy seed fairy), N. citrus (citron fairy), N. vulgaris sentis (thornbush fairy, subspecies of the common fairy), N. vulgaris (common fairy), N. v. minor (small fairy, subspecies of the common fairy), N. pusillus (dwarf fairy).

This piece reminds me of a book i found once in a book store - you know how some people press flowers? Well the book was full of pressed fairies. It was really cutely done... It would be quite interesting to see this in colour... could job btw... Take care Jeste. Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Thank you Jeste! That book you're talking about was probably part of my inspiration for this picture. My approach is just a bit more "scientific", pinning them instead of squashing, I mean. ;-) "
| 18 Nov 2004 | Rea (Spyrre) Karjalainen | Eow... I have never liked even insect-colletors, not to mention this collection. <=/ Funny, how so few feel sorry for the beautiful insects which are treated like the fairies in the picture, but when someone puts small humanlike creatures under the glass, the picture is suddenly more cruel, though the idea is the same. Heh. Sorry about that, I´m just weird. =P I like this, very much, like your other work too. If faeries existed, they probably would be collected like butterflies by scientists too. Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Indeed, we are definitely caught in the tendency to feel for creatures the more they are (or seem) similar to us. Thanks for visiting again, Rea! | 12 Oct 2005 | J E. Stålberg | Wee, i want one of these collection, nah just kidding... But its as much pity for them as for butterflies, you are really good on propotions and realistic stuff Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "That's exactly my thought, the part about butterflies. " | |
| 13 Oct 2005 | Emily | When I was a little girl, I had a walking-stick climb into my hair and sit down very politely on my shoulder. I was delighted by its bravery, but a friend of the family who was with me at the time (and who happened to be an insect collector) plucked it off of my shoulder and stuffed it in a plastic bag. The next time I saw it, it was pinned to a corkboard. I've never liked bug collections since then. Your dark (but really spiffy) drawing made me remember that. Great job! Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "What a sad experience! Thank you for your comment!" | |
| 15 Apr 2006 | J Milburn | Another picture in the 'Intelligent Fantasy Creatures being Hunted' theme... I think I am going to need to get hold of this colouring book! This does seem to have a slightly more cartoony look to it than much of your other art work. Great Picture. Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "I guess it will take some time until Ellen Million finally puts that book together. This picture was meant to look more cartoonish and cute than the others. (At least this time it was intentional ;-).)" | |
| 16 Apr 2006 | Dying Messenger | This is the perfect picture of life. It really is. It wonderfully shows that we are part of something so much bigger than we think and or know of. At any moment, we could be plucked from earth and set in a display, much like this faery one. I truly feel sad for creatures who are taken from their home to be set on display, whether they're alive or not, it's still wrong. Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Thank you again, Dying Messenger! I absolutely agree with you." | |
| 6 Dec 2006 | Martha 'Kestrel' Perotto-Wills | Your picture is so sad and beautiful!!! It really makes me think... one thing though, isn't it spelt fae? but i'm nitpicking - brilliant picture Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "I guess there are various ways to spell that. There are probably even more ideas around about what exactly such a creature is... Thanks for your comments and Merry Christmans!" | |

| 27 Dec 2007 | CoolieO | It's pretty barbaric, capturing little inocient fairies and killing them for a hobby. They still kind of look alive, are they indestructible? Esther S. Brendel (Maiden name: Esther S. Wetzel) replies: "Oh my God, I think so, yes! I guess fairies would't be killed so easily. At least that means that those poor ones could be rescued ..." | |
