SciFi and Fantasy Art: Witches herbal (2): The Aconite WolfsbaneThis is my second illustration of a serial consecrated to the plants and mushrooms used by the witches for their filters and potions.
As well as for the Mandragore, the Aconite is mentioned in “Harry Potter” : in their first lesson, Rogue questions Harry about it. This is not surprising: this plant is one of the most important in the world of Magic, it is the most toxic of all in the Ancient World, it transmits its poison throught the skin when you gather it, and a very few quantity of its root is enough for killing. In the Middle Age, it was rightly associate with the sorcellery and it has probably been generously used, not only against the wolves.
Ancient Greeks thought that Aconites were generated from the dribble of Cerberus, the three-heads dog guardian of Hell.
WARNING: This plant is very toxic. Never use it, in anyway. DANGER OF DEATH. Ink, graphite and watercolour pencils on bristol. Golden marker for the border.

| 2 Aug 2007 | Hana Běťáková | Oh, just two comments? It's not your usual style, but I love it! As an illustration to an old-fashioned herbal, this one might work really well! Anne Wipf replies: "Thank you, Hana. I think this kind of picture is less attractive, because of the few colouring and the realistic style. Nevertheless, I'm currently working on the picture following this one: the henbane. But I think I'll try to do something about this theme, not against it but complementary to it: I'm just beginning to think about (plants used by witches are so inspiring!)" | |
| 9 Oct 2007 | Sara Melissa Bean | This is a great series -- I think you could make a book of these! Anne Wipf replies: "Hehe, thank you. Perhaps, if I get the courage to continue my serial? But I have already another unfinished book to end..." | |
| 7 Apr 2008 | Menolydc | love the detail on the flowers the 3 headed thingamabober could use some work but otherwise great... Anne Wipf replies: "Thank you The 2 headed dog is inspired by an old Greek vase, it is why it is so stylized. " | |
