| 21 Oct 2005 | Leesa | I love it, you have a really nice drawing style, I'm sorry i cant give you any pointers... I wouldnt know where to start. Though once again, I totally love it! Now I'm gonna check out the rest of your stuff! Have a great week! see ya! ^_~ Amy Phoenix Clark replies: "Thank you, tho ^_^" | |
| 6 Jan 2006 | Mezza | You've already got it pretty much down pat, the main two things are larger noses and fuller lips than european/american males. Personally I think African features are HOT! but there we are. And your characters are fab, I can't get over your style, it's very individual and I love it! Amy Phoenix Clark replies: "I like them too! Only...I can't draw them well yet! Thankya ^_^" | |
| 1 Mar 2006 | Anonymous | An adorable picture. You've done very well for the Nubian features. Here's some info that you can use: Africans/African Americans come in 28 (or is it 32) different skin tones, from cafe au lait (almost white)to ebony (blue-black). Africans tend to have more true African features, while African-Americans have been mixed with white, Native American, French, Dutch, etc. Don't be afraid to experiment with different skin tones, versus the deliciously chocolate color you've used here. (Wipes drool off keyboard)LOL And don't be afraid to use thinner noses. If you work or attend school with Blacks, just look at the many variations. How do I know so much? I'm Bahamian/French on my dad's side and Blackfoot Native American on my mom's. *sincere, friendly smile* I'll keep checking back as you grow, and good luck! Amy Phoenix Clark replies: "Thank you so much for the tips! I love people-watching and I enjoy observing people of ethnic diversity so I can learn how to draw them better (hopefully recognizably). I'm still trying to figure this character's visuals out, but I'm hoping I'm nearly there. I want to start on pages and he's an inteegral part! I can write him, just not draw him "'perfectly" yet " | |
| 20 Jul 2006 | Cassie | I absolutely adore this picture for the record, other than the great tips you seem to have already recieved I'd check out an african american magazine such as Ebony or even a Vogue modeling mag. Just study real life features I suppose. Amy Phoenix Clark replies: "AH! I never even thought about that! I'm not a magazine reader at all, but that would be a great reference point " | |
| 2 Jan 2007 | Bonded Flyer | One thing is that some Africans (so-called bush men), sometimes have a bone in the middle-wall in the nose (aww, what´s the word in English???)...I hope you get it, I´m to tired to translate right now... | |
| 24 Jul 2007 | Anna Wideman | You could find an African and use him as a model! Come on, they can’t be that elusive >.> <.< hmm... Amy Phoenix Clark replies: "In my neck of the woods, they are. I can’t wait til I get certification and move out of this podunk town." | |
| 23 May 2008 | Emily | My advice: Gather up lots of pictures of Africans and try to draw the face of each and every one. Sorry, practice really is the best method for getting features right - there are no good shortcuts. I really like this piece, though! Amy Phoenix Clark replies: "Yeah, don’t I know it. Thanks though." | |
