SciFi and Fantasy Art: Protezione del Cuore

In January 2004, my youngest sister was suddenly hospitalized, complaining of chest paint. In a matter of hours, her condition was upgraded to critical, and she was transfered to a cardiac specialist center to prep her for immediate surgury. The doctors thought she might have had an aortic aneurysm, and for a little while, we thought we might lose her...

That's when I began this picture.

This story has a happy ending; a few more hours of observation, and my sister's condition cleared away completely. Doctors don't like to throw around the 'M' word, and for good reason, I guess. But sometimes, you've got to ask yourself...do you believe in miracles?

The title is Italian for 'Protector of the Heart', and this is a protective piece. I channeled all my hopes and fears and terrors and creative energies into this piece, as I was several thousand miles away from my sister and could not be with her in the flesh. I imagined an Angel, sword held close to its ward, ever ready to strike out at any harm which ventured too close.

This is a beautiful piece, and it is evident that you put alot of care and feeling into it. i'm glad your sister is alright, and i think this is an incredible tribute to her and how much you must care. this deserves to win mod's choice. keep up the good work!

As always, you have just an amazing skill with framing and composition. It's what sets this piece apart--it's not that the central figure isn't wonderful as well, and I particularly love his/her/its wings and the sort of tattered edge they have, but the framework makes it *more* than just another gothic angel, especially considering how brilliantly and perfectly that framework integrates. I particularly like how the heart you worked in is a *real* heart, or a stylized real heart, and not the traditional heart-shape which bears no real resemblance to the organ.
