SciFi and Fantasy Art: Illian Sunset

September 25th, 2002
On September 30th, 1999, my Elfwood gallery debuted here in the 'woods, and this painting was one of the first four images I ever uploaded. Since then, I've made a lot of progress, but this piece still remains a perpetual favorite

This is a quasi-Robert Jordan-inspired piece; what I think the sunset must look like in Illian. The painting itself is based off of another painting made by an anonymous artist in 1587 depicting a comet's passing; anyone interested in seeing the original should check out a book called 'Fire and Ice' which is all about commets in art throughout history. I left the comet out of my drawing, and instead added a moon, which you can hardly see anymore because I, being the stupid idiot I was at the time, cut massive portions off the top of my paintin in order to fit it into a frame. I'm still slapping myself, but overall, I don't think it takes as much away from the spirit of the picture as my tempermental internal artiste like to tell me.

In Summer 2001 I re-painted this image, making sure to add the moon fully, and also taking the time to add a few more touches. You can see it here in this gallery titled 'What Dreams May Come'

WOW, this is amazing. This is definitely one of your best works. I would buy this and stick it up on my wall!

:-) Lisa Ann (Jae) Andresen replies: "this was one of the original seven pictures I put up here on Elfwood, and it pleases me so much that it still gets as many comments as it does. maybe I will make prints of it available, someday."

if one day, there is another life, and time, and money, I would want to travel to world, looking for sunsets like this. This calls to the soul, and reminds us of the wonder of living and seeing things beyond our power.

:-) Lisa Ann (Jae) Andresen replies: "::gasps:: that's about the most beautiful thing anyone's ever said about my artwork... ::hugs:: thank you..."

I really like this. Watercolors? You have a real skill for them. You didn't let it get muddy, with the colors to mixed together. Not everything has a blurred line or a harsh line. You did a good job with contrasting and variety. The color scheme is appealing. It really is wonderfully done!

This is probably my most favorite here, too. The colors just drew me in directly to this picture. It stirs up a happy/contented feeling within me. Great work.
