SciFi and Fantasy Art: Mermaid

yes, I know. Red and orange-haired mermaids are so cliche after Disney's Little Mermaid. But has anyone stopped to consider why? Red and orange go GREAT with underwater tones, and beside, coral colors are very oceany. So I maintain that I am not furthering a cliche but rather embracing colors that make sense.

yeah, that's what I tell myself.

Oh, this isn't cliche. You don't have to worry. Nessly's right, you do make her look like a seperate species altogether. I'm also fond of the cute little sea-star border. Hee, it's adorable.!

:-) Lisa Ann (Jae) Andresen replies: "I don't mind being cliche, anystuffs. People looking for non-cliche fantasy artwork only need to search for "Ursula Vernon" Me, I like my archetypes very much, thank you!"

I love the way you draw mermaids. They don't look like humans with fish tails, they look like their own unique species. Lovely background too.

:-) Lisa Ann (Jae) Andresen replies: "You know, I think that's the most important thing about mermaids, because they aren't human, and they're perfectly adapted to the watter. Wanna know a secret? You can't see it, but her fingers are webbed. ::grins::"

Agrees with the above...nice rendition. I like the webby fin down her back, and her gills, too.

:-) Lisa Ann (Jae) Andresen replies: "I like her gills, too. They're my most favorite parts. Thank you!"

Jae, jae, how is it possible that you can do such an awesome thing and speak of cliches? I mean, really! And you wanna know a secret? At first I hated her tail, because at first I didn't see the tailfin. It took three times to realize "OMG! That's not a plant that's her *tail*!" You don't only do mermaids that are their own distinct species, you do mermaids that make *sense* because they're showing adaptions in blending into their enviornment. And that, Jaejae, is about as far from cliched as I know how to get.

:-) Lisa Ann (Jae) Andresen replies: "Isn't it funny...? There's "my" dragons, and... now "my" mermaids... Well. I'm just putting my own spin on all sorts of fantasy creatures... thank you, Kassly for your comment. I didn't like her tail at first, either, or the blue skin. But now it's all beginning to make sense."

no, if you want cliche mermaids, come to my gallery. anyway, am I the only one that noticed her ear! that's simply adorable! little webby ear! I've also noticed that not a part of this page is white, which also makes it super nifty. Watercolors for an underwater pic, not a bad concept.. one little pro'lem, though. being that she's going to be trying to get around the sea, she'd need some more fin on that tail to get her around. next to Ursula Vernon's mermaids, however, I'm inclined to call yours my favorite.
