SciFi and Fantasy Art: Brunette Faerie

Most of what I do is experimental. She is a polymer clay sculpture. I stuck my hair on her head. If I ever do that again I will use synthetic hair-- It may be easier to work with. I did not make the frog BTW-that normally sits on top of my computer. Other than that, I painted her eyes and lips. She hs small purple beads for earrings and a flower petal skirt I made out of a silk flower. April-May 04

whee! First comment! This is a really cool piece. I would have never thought to use the beads and flowers and whatnot. Snaps for creativity! Then again, I'm quite unspiffy when it comes to sculptural stuff, so, snaps for talent, too!

:-) Audrey S. Totire replies: "...and snaps to you for being the first to comment on this! I like to work in 3-D forms as well as flat surface...I was thinking of working this one like any doll. I used to work at a craft store and got some cool ideas like the flower petal skirt from a lady checking out her purchase."

Very creative and beautiful work. I like the pose that you used, its really nice. I like your use of the silk flowers in the dress. I've always admired people that are so talented with sculptures, you really have a gift.

:-) Audrey S. Totire replies: "Now if only I had a gift of time to keep trying new things! I appreciate that your comment. I had gotten the idea for a flower-petal skirt from a lady at the check out line at the craft store....Great place to gather ideas!"

Hey Audrey, I was reading a tutorial where it said that you should use fabric glue to glue all the ends of the hair together...like the end of a shoelace. Then, when it dries, you poke a hole in the top of her head and insert the hair there. Then apply a bit of glue around the edge of the face and hairline and part the hair down the center, then press it against the glue. It creates a hairline while leaving some of the hair free to flow from the head. For your first fairy, this is really well done. If you decide to pursue this line of sculpture...there's a big market for One-of-a-Kind fairies on eBay. Nice piece!

:-) Audrey S. Totire replies: "I learned a lot while doing this. I have discovered that using a good glue for hair is the best way to secure it. I did a bad thing though...I experimented by baking some of the hair into the clay. I thought for a short time would not damamge the hair, but it did take away the sheen. I found wood glue to be great at securing hair, but it gets kind of messy. Working with hair is very messy! *L*"

Wow, you did a very nice job. My wife made some polymer clay fairies, so this reminds me of that. I really like how she's sitting in the leaves among the flowers, in a seemingly "natural setting" for her.

:-) Audrey S. Totire replies: "I like taking pictures outside. The picture quality is always better. Dollmaking is new to me. I enjoy it but it is somewhat tedious. I hope to do more with it later. Thanks!"

*gasp* I like the frog! I found a toad on my porch yesterday that looked just like that...almost. ^__^ You did a great job with the fairy. A lot of the time, those little figurines have really wierd faces, but yours looks great!
