SciFi and Fantasy Art: 'H' is for Hippogriff

This is the piece I am submitting to Bi-Frost Fantasy for the Illuminated Letters project. I chose a hippogriff since I couldn't think of anything else. I didn't want to do the typical 'd-is-for-dragon, F-is-for- fairy' so on...I wanted to do something less common but I was at a loss. I had just read my son's Harry Potter book, 'The Prisoner Of Azkaban,' which had Buckbeak the hippogriff. *L*--I wish I had some better computer art tools. There was a discussion amongst Bi-Frost artists about the pros and cons of relying on the computer and I am VERY antiquated. I drew and painted the hippogrif first, then used my trusty exacto-blade and cut it out and pasted it on a painted letter H. I scanned it and used my PC Paintbrush and filled the background in black with stars, blended white area and smudged up areas. My biggest difficulty was trying to keep the lines straight on the letter. I never enjoyed lettering unless it was calligraphy. Feb.14, 2003

:-) Audrey S. Totire replies: "I don't know if you are part of Bifrost Fantasy but this is part of Bifrost's Alphabet tour. One of the members, Brian Husted, has most of the alphabet featured in his gallery. Check it out sometime. Thanks for stopping by!"

LOVE the wings and the face and the legs and the tail and the body and the background and...uhh...pretty much everything!

Great job!

:-) Audrey S. Totire replies: "It was the best I could do for drawing a hippogriff before the movie came out. Thanks!"

Looks a bit like the griffin (the front bit, I mean) from 'Jim Henson's The Storyteller': 'The Luck Child' (anyone seen that?). Same expression, or something. Can't think what. He's cute! (Your hippogriff, not the griffin, although the griffin's cute too. I'm shutting up now.)

Wow I like the wings, and the slightly mean expression, we all know he's a big softie though

Its really awesome! although I think It's wings are a tad too small...but other wise it rocks!

:-) Audrey S. Totire replies: "Thanks. I drew this soon after I read the 3rd Harry Potter book. It is cartoony and cute-like and not real to the eye, so I realise that wings like that are not very proportionate if the animal was real. When the movie version of Prisoner of Azkaban came out, the artists did a superb job of creating a very life-like hippogryph. I realise my cartoony version of the critter pales in comparison to it. Thanks for your comment!"
