SciFi and Fantasy Art Races of Venninmaa by Tiina Aumala

These are sketches of the three human-like races inhabiting Venninmaa a fantasy world based on Finnish mythology I am currently working on. They all share the same primordial mother with humans, but their primordial fathers set them apart from them and each other.

[From left to right:] the seeda, or menningät, are mystical and powerful elfish inhabitants of forests and hills. Accoding to legend their father is Louhi-ukko, the male aspect of Louhi. The tallo, or giants, are nasty, cold-resistant and, well, gigantic, as the human-tallo comparison drawing shows. I based their face on mammoth skulls, as ancient people thought mammoth bones belonged to dead giants. The komesâga, or bear-men, are basically bear-worshipping neanderthals with long faces. They believe Komees, the father of bears, is also their primordial father and they can turn into bears at will.

PS. the picture 'Musti' also belongs to this world.

Listen to the Finnish metal band Finntroll, from their songs you could make awesome pictures, I know you could. How about it? I'm Finnish too, by the way.
18 Nov 2003	Teemu U Helenius	Loading... Oh, so ignore my question under the evil seeda wossname, Ikuri(?). This Vennimaa sounds F A S C I N A T I N G. If it's a RPG world, wanna play in it. If not, still wanna play in it. Can I have it? Ihan oikeasti tästä syntyisi menestyvä kaupallinen roolipeli. Minä ainakin ostaisin. Tyrkytä vaikka Ville Vuorelalle. 23 Jun 2005	Daniel Maertens	Loading... This is really interesting, I have never read into finnish mythos yet, but I am very interested now, you did a great job on these characters. Good depth and stylized stuff. Tiina Aumala replies: "There's woefully little literature available on Finnish myths, but I wish you luck at finding what you can."
30 Oct 2005	Martin krieger (or daebin the traveler)	Loading... Giant people must only be able to live where its very cold? How much contact do the peoples have with each other? And how big are the elves? Trolls eat whole animals, so the bones give them a surplus of calcium, to prevent bone spurs, i think there skin calcifies at night causing them to become hard like stone and barely able to move. Good defense being rock hard if you cant move... Even though its typically the daytime which turns trolls of legend into stone... Tiina Aumala replies: "Um, are we talking about my world or yours? "

All my other questions still stand posed.(on the contact between members of different races and stuff) how tall are the seeda? Tiina Aumala replies: "Oh, the giants lived beyond the arctic circle in what is now known as the barren lands (Marron maat). Nowadays they are rare sights, generally feared. The seeda keep their distance with humans, humans likewise with seeda. "
27 Sep 2006	Anonymous	Loading... So assuming that the seeda are very diferent from humans... Are they small? (sorry for asking the same question three times) i like this world you are creating... Theres so much time left for the future, i would love to see this all avalable to the (more) general public one day. Thank you for answering my questions tiina.
