SciFi and Fantasy Art: Lady Fins

Shahkme prefers the warmer southern waters but has been known to wander the north tributaries in search of pretty “jewels” to add to her collection. Unfortunately, the gems she seeks are the toe bones of unsuspecting humans, dangling their feet or wading in the shallows. Her preferred method of extraction is to bite them clean off the owner! So, the next time you feel a nibble on your submerged little piggies, beware!

*This is definitely my best mermaid type creature. I like the “far east” look she conveys. All those sharp points emphasize her prickly personality, while maintaining a noble demeanor. I may draw more of her schoolmates displaying their “jewelry”.

Ohh, she's beautiful! I love how she has... er.. realistic proportions. And her facial expression is fabulous!

12 Barbara J. Wickham replies: "He-he-he...curvy ladies are fun to draw, they have more...uh...curves! Like me! Anyhoo, I'm hoping to add more details during coloring, maybe even another Finkin in the background. We shall see... Thank you so much for your lovely comments on my neglected pics. I'm a happy camper now!"

Awesome Barb, I like her. I really like the design of the fin like hair stuff on her head and the tail part, her pose is really nice too. Elegant like all the rest so far. Sweet.

1 Barbara J. Wickham replies: "Thank you very much! I like the use of the word elegant in describing her. It seems to fit nicely. Her design reflects both shark and manta ray elements, thus the fin-hair. "

Oh I love her. I think mermaids are so much fun! (I've loved them since I was very young.) But I love how individual she is. Your art is so amazing! Will you please come see my mermaid?

13 Barbara J. Wickham replies: "Thank you, you're so nice. Mermaids rank high on my list too but I've drawn only a few. What a shame! Of course I'd love to come see your mermaid! I'll be by as soon as I can. Thanks again!"

It's pieces like this that make me wonder. About what? Well, maybe there should be a background and then I think, but would that take away from the beautiful main focus? Anyhow, wonderfully done! 2

12 Barbara J. Wickham replies: "Aw shucks. Thank you. I like your comment. It's a critique and compliment all rolled into one.
You know, you're right about the background thing. It is a serious weakness I have had trouble overcoming. If I draw the main character first than I sometimes lose interest and move on to another idea. If I put a background in first this often forces me to finish the whole piece. Pretty sad, huh?"

Excellent mer. I can see her colored up nice and poisonously bright. . .

1 Barbara J. Wickham replies: "...with more spikes and maybe quills like a lionfish. Yes, I agree. Color is definitely needed and I do love the idea of a dangerously-hued beauty. I have a great ocean life book at home that I need to take a look thru..."
