SciFi and Fantasy Art: Maggie: First Encounter (color)

See the black & white version for the story background.

This took me a couple of months to color using Photoshop and a mouse (yuck!). My technique involves creating 'masks' by outlining selections, separating the different characters and background elements. Then I use the paint tools for color and texture and the dodge and burn tools to increase the contrast. I did use one filter to create the rock texture. I had a lot of fun doing this, but it was extremely challenging. The worst part was trying to keep my layers straight!

Overall I am very pleased with how it turned out, especially in regards to how it has the feeling of a fairy tale type style. My goal was not realism but more of a idealized environment to compliment the subjects. Tell me what you think!

Update: I did an art trade with the wonderful and talented Gloria Bowden and for her half of the trade she did an awesome pic of Maggie. Please have a look!

Beautiful! I would love to hear the story behind it. It has such a great magical feel to it.

11 Barbara J. Wickham replies: "Thank you!

My wonderful brother got me a manga program that has nifty tools to make setting up a comic easier. Since I had too many projects going at once I had to seriously focus down to only a few. Fortunately, this story is the first one I want to complete using the program. I'm sure it will take quite a while but I am determined to finish this."

Good job! The mane looks nice.

11 Barbara J. Wickham replies: "Thank you so much! I am very happy with the way the mane turned out. I don't think real horse hair would twist so smoothly like that but I guess we can just pretend for now. *lol*"

It's a great picture, but I really have to congratulate you on making the jeans *look* like blue jeans. Worn, played and lived in jeans!

18 Barbara J. Wickham replies: "Thank you! I guess it's because I practically live in my own jeans and I have become intimately familiar with the look and feel of a good, lived-in pair of jeans! The only problem is that I really stuggle with drawing dresses. I was, and still am kind of a tom-boy and so I'm not very good with the girlie stuff. *lol*"

HOW can you have that much PATIENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love this pic, it looks like my day-dream world....

1 Barbara J. Wickham replies: "*lol* I don’t know how I managed it, to tell the truth. Life is much easier now that I have a tablet. Muuuuch easier.

It’s my day dream world too! My backgrounds always look idyllic because I want so much for it to be real. *sighs sadly*

Thank you for your wonderful comments, Katie!"

Yeah we always learn things from drawing!!!! Thats why I have nothing up yet.. I’ve been doing rough drafts and I only have like five or four done.. do you think thats enough to start out with??

:-) Barbara J. Wickham replies: "Definitely! The point is to post your work so other artists can give you feedback. I’ve gotten some fantastic tips and advice from visitors to my gallery and even the harshest criticisms help me do better."

The picture is nice but who meets whom?

:-) Barbara J. Wickham replies: "One thing for sure, both found the last thing they were expecting. 1"

Oh ok I will put them up then!! I have no clue how u got bad feedback with your talent tho.. that puzzles me. My pics won’t be as good as you see on Elfwood normally but they’re ok. I really hope u like them!! I will try to put them up sometime this month!

:-) Barbara J. Wickham replies: "*lol* Trust me. There is always someone more talented or more skilled. However, I will say there are times when I don’t agree with a crit, but even then there is something to be learned. No matter what your skill level, there will always be someone who will be inspired by what you do, or how you do it. "
