SciFi and Fantasy Art: Night and Day

Here are two sisters. One is named Majik (see her also in the pic titled, Majik) and the other is named Mystik. These two are as different as, well night & day. Majik is an accomplished Adept in the elemental magics, including spirit. Mystik is also quite talented, but her skills are a bit more unpredictable. She has chosen to islolate herself in the mountains beyond Aquaillia which suits her intorverted personality just fine. Majik has tried to convince her older sibling to come back to the city to study but Mystik will have none of it. The crowds and bustle of Aquaillia tend to make her condition worse and Mystik would like to prevent any injurious outbursts of her abilities. Unlike her assertive sister, Mystik tries to hide from her problems, even when it’s obvious that she is increasingly loosing control.

The symbol between them is a family motif; worn with pride by Mystik and magically concealed by Majik. It would not do for Majik to so openly display her family loyalties in the unstable political environment of the city and it’s many temples.

...so beautiful! I adore the layout on this one -- really makes me want to get on photoshop again. And the family crest is schweet-- it looks like a dream catcher! The colors you chose to represent the sisters correspond with what I think their color personality tests might be, heh -- Majik's more yellow while Mystik's definately a blue personality. ^_~

Yeah, and I'm pretty sure those are the coolest names for mages ever. Majik and Mystik. 2 Lo-o-ove it! 2

1 Barbara J. Wickham replies: "I'm finding that Photoshop is a great way to bring new life to old sketches. This pic is a combo of 5 separate pictures: 1 for each character portrait, 1 for the tattoo design and 2 different designs for the background. It's like a picture casserole! *snicker*

I'm glad you noticed the color scheme since the colors do have a lot to do with both the personalities and the magic styles of each sister. *lol* I'm also glad you like the names. They are old characters so those names date back to the early 80's, however I'm too fond of them to change either one."

1 Barbara J. Wickham replies: "Thank you very much! The sketches are old, as are the character concepts for the sisters. I thought it a good time to give them an update and it also gave me a good excuse to practice the use of composition and color. I'm so glad you like it!"

First of all this is gorgeous! I like the girl on the right most. She looks so calm. Her top lip look a little bit big to me, other that that she is dang near perfect. I like the way you did her nose too! =)

1 Barbara J. Wickham replies: "Thanks! I love that you picked Mystic as being the calm one. She's the more unstable of the two but Majik can be a bit hyper too. Both portraits are the original sketches of these characters when I very first conceived them. I wanted to use these drawings regardless of the fact that they aren't the best I've done of these sisters. I really appreciate your input on this one since I'm rather fond of these characters."

Wow, their faces look so graceful! Love the aetric, mythological feel too! And that sign reminds me of the anime show Fullmetal Alchemist... 10

41 Barbara J. Wickham replies: "I've only been able to catch a few episodes of that show but it is very, very cool. I love the whole alchemy thing and the idea of equivalent exchange. Makes the use of magical elements more rational. Afterall, the power has to come from somewhere and putting a price on the use of that power makes for a more interesting story.

That idea is very much a part of these characters. Magic does not come easy to them and the price is higher for some than it is for others. What they take from the elements they must give back. Also, they have a plethora of deities who are often willing to act as elemental loan sharks, but this is a loan you most definitely pay back on time...or else. There's nothing worse than being in debt to a god!

Thank you so much for the comment! It makes me so happy to hear what folks see in my drawings."

They're both really beautiful! the both look regal and poised. I like the story, too! It adds a lot to the portrait! The family's symbol is really excelent as well! Very creative.

1 Barbara J. Wickham replies: "Thank you! Indeed, both ladies come from a very proud family and I also wanted to show that they are similiar, yet different; two sides of the same coin, as it were. I wanted the symbol to represent the earthy traditions of the family and I like the fact that it seems a bit primitive for these modern ladies. Contrasts and contradictions make for interesting stories! *lol*"

ooooo, I like their eyes! And their hair too, yes I like it all! It...glows!

1 Barbara J. Wickham replies: "I'm so glad you like it! Thank you, Krystal. ^__^"
