SciFi and Fantasy Art: Sun DancerIn my Inner Realm’s Southern Region, there are three territories appropriately known as the War States. Karik-sed to the northeast, Anjar-sed to the northwest and Mahafes, the southernmost area that meets the outer reaches of the western sea. The borders of these lands frequently change depending on which warlord is in current power at the time. The current instability of leadership has been occurring over many generations due to a curse that had been placed on the land that puts a doom on any man or woman of royal blood. This came about because of an indiscretion of the last King who desecrated a sacred well by having a tryst with a serving girl in the holy waters. Needless to say, the goddess of that well was so insulted she banished the kingship to the wastes, forbidding his blood to ever return to the Burning Lands. Here the same goddess, Ahkmahafes is pictured. She is fire incarnate in all its forms. She is the life-giving rays of the sun that can also sear the life out of a man. She is the gentle candle flame that can spark a raging inferno. She is a generous deity with a very short fuse.

I am complrtely blown away by the movement in the fabric and once again you astound me with the face. Your a great talent here in the woods. Barbara J. Wickham replies: "*blushes* Oh my! You are so very flattering. I get a kick whenever anyone says a pic of mine deserves Mod's. That's better than getting the actual pick itself! I try to take a peek at the daily MC and I'm constantly blown away. So, thank you so much for awarding me with your own personal "Lloyd's Choice". *grin*
I really had a blast on this pic. The fabric gained a life of it's own during the drawing and I remember contemplating on if the whole background should be more of the material going off into infinity. Yet, I'm more than happy with the stained glass type pattern. It adds a different type of texture and really helps emphasize the figure. Regarding her face, I have to admit that it wigs me out a little. Her expression is so intense! I like it though. Thanks again!"
| 3 Feb 2005 | Ceddy | Now I remember why I put a link to your page on mine..lol..let's see. The clothing is noteworthy, the intricacy of the patterns in the background spellbinding, her hair also beautiful. The face..its nice, but in the end it turned out looking rather Oriental. Parts of her body, like her neck and stomach, are a little misproportioned, it seems to me, but I am not an artist. But her eyes...wow...they're dark and focused...intent is the word I search for. Almost as if she has a purpose and always will. It's a beautiful piece. Perhaps it did deserve a mod's choice, as the gentleman behind me said. Barbara J. Wickham replies: "You're much too kind! I'm very grateful for your splendid comments!
It's interesting about the proportions of her body. I remember doing the figure, trying to keep the line of her body consistent with the flow I imagined for the composition. The figure had a very stylized look to it before I added the fabric. By itself it may have been more effective. She does have a bit of an awkward build, but I do have a tendency to distort or exaggerate my figures. It just seems more interesting that way. Besides, being a closet perfectionist, it's a little dangerous for me to get too close to realism. I'd eventually go bonkers! Tee hee!
Anyhoo, her face is very eastern which actually fits into her background and I really like the intensity since that is a major focal point of the pic.
Thanks again for the lovely comment!"
| 30 Jul 2005 | Ambsace | I am noticing a slight Pini-ish style to your drawings, but that could just be my Elfquest obsession shining through. ^_^" I love the texture of her hair--it looks soft and very touchable. The way the cloth moves around her is wonderfully flowy, and the background must have been hell to draw (but heaven to look at!!!). However, I feel that there are a few too many lines on her midsection--it makes her look a bit twisted. If you simplified this a bit, I think this piccy woud be absolutely magnifiique. Barbara J. Wickham replies: "You may let your Elfquest obsession shine on here anytime! I was & am still greatly influenced by the art of Pini. Her characters had such soulful faces and it was more than just big eyes.
I also love how her hair turned out. My hair is such a frizz-bomb that I guess this was wishful thinking on my part. *cry*
I do agree that those lines on her tummy are a bit distracting. I was trying to make her look a bit "twisted", like one of those contortionists. It's a part of her nature to be very sinuous. I will see if I can improve that.
You are absolutely magnifique for leaving such a great comment. I really appreciate the feedback. Thank you!"

| 30 Jan 2006 | V. 'Frog-lady' Neuenschwander | WOAH. The details, the details! I love the story this comes with, the rapid movement in her clothing, and the exquisitely intricate background- truly worthy of a mod's choice! Barbara J. Wickham replies: "*blushes* Thank you! *lol* Every time someone says one of my pics deserved a Mod's I consider that just as good as getting a Mod's. " | |
| 17 Jun 2006 | Audrey S. Totire | Ooooh! The detail! This would be fun to use as a coloring book page. Barbara J. Wickham replies: "*lol* It's like those crazy geometrical designs my niece loves to color. Personally, it would drive me insane! *lol*
Thanks for the fun comment!"
| 5 Jul 2006 | Tallodi | Amazing. I agree with Frog-lady, it's definetely MC material. Even if those geometric things make me dizzy... *_* Barbara J. Wickham replies: "Awww. Thank you! I haven't done a crazy-detailed pic like this in a long while. That means one is in my near future. *shudder*" | |
| 27 Feb 2007 | Jingsee | I love the background! This should be colored. Barbara J. Wickham replies: "It's definitely one of the better backgrounds I've done, however I don't do many so that's not saying much. *lol* I am so overwhelmed with the many pics I want to update and color that I will never get to all of them. Hopefully, this will be one of the few that I do update.
Thank you for the lovely comment!"
