SciFi and Fantasy Art: Angel

The subject matter is a little personal (pain anguish etc - hence the heart), but the picture turned out very different from what I imagined, partially because my desire for asthetics got in the way. In the end I went for 'pretty' instead of 'feeling'. The angel was supposed to be holding out her own heart (NOT eating it. And she still isn't eating it), and be covered in blood (that happens when you've cut out your own heart), but I spent so much time colouring her that I just couldn't bear to cover her with blood (it's also why she's so... exposed. I couldn't bear to cover her with clothes either). Besides, I have no idea what blood covered skin would look like. I doubt it's in any artists' reference books. I'm both proud and disappointed with this one. Proud because it's the most 'realistic' and refined picture I've done. Disappointed because it turned out a little weak, composition wise. Also, I couldn't quite decide on the title ('Sacrifice' for a slightly angst ridden, Goth-y touch? 'Bloody Angel' for a dark, satirical and self depricating title?), so went for the simplest alternative. Still, I really really enjoyed drawing and colouring it. Stock photos are the best. About a half dozen photos went into the background (bet you can't make them out). I was also VERY lazy on the wings, which involved just a few filters and layer adjustments. The hair, on the other hand, was a nightmare drawn (almost) strand by strand, and it STILL doesn't look right. The hand, too, was tough. That supernova on her head is meant to be a funky halo thing.

It really reminds me of how i feel sometimes (not to mention it kinda looks like me but with longer hair!) i was feeling really down today so i surfed the net n found ur pic! It actually made me feel a lot better... Very beautifully done and extraordinary detail

22 Apr 2007	Inquisitor	Loading... I was searching the web for some good drawings of angels to serve as a banner for my Sisters of Battle army. The tale of their order features an angel who has her heart ripped out, so this picture was ideal! I really like the way the lava and fire give a special atmosphere to the whole. Wish I could draw as good as this!
