SciFi and Fantasy Art: The 3 Faces of Fantasy

I painted these characters with the idea in mind to show 3 of the characters that I feel are basic to all good fantasy. First the old Mentor, whether it be Merlin, Gandalf, Obi-Wan Kenobi or Allanon... every good fantasy story has to have someone to be a teacher or the historic narrator. Then besides the hero, there generally is a displaced and often war weary veteran that helps keep the younger characters alive. Aragorn, Walker Boh, and any of Jordan's Warders come to mind as these characters. Finally, there has to be an enemy and monster, who is usually shown to be quite evil through it's ugliness. Fantasy writers I have found loves to use the old cowboy adage of the white and black hat to show the 'bad guy', thus the uglier and meaner the monster, usually the better the story. Of course, this isn't always true in all fantasy stories, but it did make for a nice sedgeway into my painting.

This is SO cool. I really like How the Zombie (that's what it is, right?) and the reptilian blend together

Wow, is that watercolor? If it is, it’s seriously one of the best watercolors I’ve ever seen that was done by someone other than Van Gogh or one os the "masters."

And I agree the dragon/lizard blends quite nicely with the weathered hero. I thought it was a breast plate when I saw the thumbnail.

Again, very good!

Cheers \m/
