SciFi and Fantasy Art: Gimli the DwarfGimli, son of Gloin, of Durin's line, it's the dwarf who was chosen in Rivendell to rapresent the dwarves in the Company of the Ring, to escort Frodo towards the east. I must admit that dwarves, especially if we consider the imaginary world of 'The Lord of the Rings', are characters who fascinate me a lot. Probably the first reason is due to the fact that dwarves have been always associated to the mountains, their favoured enviroment, and the mountains occupys an important place in my heart. They are grandiose, majestic, misterious, wild, and they exerts a strong attraction over myself. Some friends of mine found the atmosphere of the drawing too much dark and disquieting, but I think the figure is suitable for Gimli. Probably many people can note that the face doesn't reflect the stereotype diffused between the illustratorrs of fantasy and not only, for example the big nose, nevertheless Tolkien doesn't describe the dwarves properly in this way, so I've chosen the approach of the illustrator Alan Lee providing the dwarf with a face not too much deformed or grotesque. | |

| 11 May 2001 | Lindsay | Well...he certainly looks...neat. I assume this portrait was done just after Aragorn's wedding? | |
| 12 Jun 2001 | Zigmar | The picture is nice, but his HANDS... It anything but DWARF's hands... | |
| 20 Jun 2001 | jim | hmm well they are right about the hand, it is not a hand of warrior. The hair is really great, love the colours | |
| 27 Dec 2001 | Dawna L Burke | Ooo I like the border. I like the dwarf too but the first thing that hit me was the border. | |
| 3 Jan 2002 | Ander | The axe is all wrong, and if your going to have him looking that neat his helm should not be dinged, and ofcourse the hand, but otherwise a wonderful pic. You show great talent. | |
| 20 Apr 2002 | June G. Shepherd | This is really well done. I love your pencil work! The only criticism I can come up with is that the folds on his cloak on our right look really sharp, like they'd been pressed on purpose. You've done an amazing job on his hair; moustache and beard included (love the wavy look). The detail on the helmet is great. Good hands, too. Well, I could go on and on but will just finish by saying it's a great picture. | |
| 12 Jan 2003 | Lisa 'Michael' Paquette | Well, it seems to be done in an older-fashioned style, certainly. While I love the whole picture, two things are spectacular: the border and the ding on his hat. I don't know why that hat fascinates me so much. | |
| 22 Mar 2003 | Becky | The depth and lighting are captivating! I wish I could draw like this! | |
| 28 Jan 2004 | Oliver Hains | For a dwarf, or whatever he is, the hands look very gentle and feminine, excellent, nevertheless. | |
