SciFi and Fantasy Art: Goldberry

This study is the result of several attempts to rapresent the character of Goldberry, the gentle wife of Tom Bombadil, the lord of the Old Forest. The idea I got of this character from reading the tale is a delicate woman, of dreaming lineaments, with no malice or wickedness, without that disenchantment so typical of our society. Perhaps a figure too much ethereal, platonic, belonging rather to the spiritual domain than to the material one. Anyway, I think it's posssible to associate to this character an image of gentleness, serenity, armony with the nature, grace, light-heartedness perhaps veiled by a few malincony, all aspects I tried to reproduce in the picture, but I'n not sure to do justice to the Goldberry of The lord of the Rings. So Tolkien describes Goldberry when Frodo and Sam enter the house of Tom Bombadil: ' ... her long yellow hair rippled down her shoukders; her gown was green, green as young reeds, shot with silver like beads of dew; and her belt was of gold, shaped like a chain of flag-lilies set with the pale-blue eyes of forgot-me-nots ..'

Well, I dont think the woman is exceptionally beautful, but she is incredibly well drawn...and that BACKGROUND! I nearly didnt look at this, but when I did, it was like, wow, sit and stare agape for a moment! I love the dreamlike quality of the picture. I think her dress could use alittle more shading to give it more shape, But this is lovely!
