SciFi and Fantasy Art: Al'Lan Mandragoran II

This is another attempt to draw Lan and I think I've gotten a little bit closer. I'd really like some comments on this one too. :)

Actually, one major source of problems is the ear -- moving it will fix a lot. The best rule of thumb to follow is: the tip of the ear lines up with the eyebrows, the bottom of the lobe lines up with the line between the lips. The top part of the ear actually *attached* to the head should line up with the center of the eyes, and the bottom part of ear that's attached (unless, of course, you've got attached lobes, in which case see above!) should be somewhere in the mid area of the upper lip. (That would be the flesh-colored part of the lip, not the pink part.) Other than that, not a bad attempt: as someone said, the hair looks too flat (in fact, it looks plastered down, so choose what look you really want), but as someone else said, the shading is very nice.

numero uno- I (personally) picture Lan as having more of a carved, sharp look, this guy is a little wrinkled and lumpy. Strighter lines, and watch your proportions. these are a little off.

i really do like the way you have done his eyes in this pic, but they are hard to define because of the harsh shading. I am in no way a perfect artist, so this is more of a suggestion than a critique. the way I have learned to shade more correct is to first get the basic drawing out, the eyes, mouth, etc, then i first start shading very lightly, to see where the shadows should go, and lay out where it should be darker and lighter, in order to make certain things have more depth, like the eye in its socket, or more pronunciation, like the cheekbones or area around the mouth. once I have done that i gradually fill in the shading, making it darker where it should be, and then making the lightest contrast shadows last. i dont know if this will help, but if it will be of any use to you, i am glad

Along with what everyone else has said, his nose is disproportionate to the angle of his face. He appears to not be facing straight at us, but his nose is. It may just be me, though. 2

He's supposed to have a face of straight angles (which is why some people called him "stone face". He sould also look a little younger. After all, Nynaeve loves him.
