SciFi and Fantasy Art: Elfwood Eye

This is my entry in the Bifrost: Paparazzi of the Woods project. It's the front of one of the trashiest tabloids in all of fantasy-dom, the 'Elfwood Eye'.

The cover story is an expose on the 'Misfits of Fantasy Support Group'. As you can see from their expressions, the members weren't very happy about having a photographer intrude on their meeting.

Clockwise from left to right the members pictured are: Betty the Wo-fish (opposite of a mermaid, she has the top half of a fish and the bottom half of a woman), Pan-Z the peaceful Kill-Bot, Gary the unusually tall & skinny dwarf, Earl the macho pixie, Tayel 'Stumpy' Amroy the short stocky elf, Gertrude the evil fairy godmother (once attempted to turn Cinderella into a pumpkin and run off with the prince herself), and Clarice the angel with upside down wings.

This was drawn entirely in Photoshop. I know that things are a bit crowded, but most tabloid covers are a mess anyways so I think that this works. I may do a few drawings of the individual members so that you can see a bit more of what they look like, I might also draw some of the Misfits of Fantasy Support Group members that I couldn't fit in this picture.

Hey Brian, You know I really love this pic...your sense of humor is very apparent and it fits the theme of the Paparazzi project perfectly! Great imagination! *smiles*

:-) Brian L. Husted replies: "Thanks, just wait until you see my entry in the next project (alternative elementals)...It's really weird even compared to this one!"

It's the griffo-hipp that cracks me up the most.

...poor horse with little turkey legs! Awesome--you come up with some of the greatest ideas Brian!

:-) Brian L. Husted replies: "I tried to cram enough into this drawing that people would find at least one or two things that struck them as funny. A lot of time I come up with too many ideas to be able to do a finished work of all of them, so this gave me a chance to include a lot of them at once."

I love this Brian, it gave me a great laugh whan I saw it in Bifrost. I bet you nearly got lynched? LOL!

13 Brian L. Husted replies: "Nah, the Peaceful Kill-Bot intervened and kept them from roughing me up, that's how I got away with the picture."

elves are actuly shoter than humans in D&D for some reason

:-) Brian L. Husted replies: "Yeah, D&D elves are a bit shorter than humans, Tolkien's elves are about the same, and Santa's elves are usually much shorter. I never said that my elf was from any of those established worlds. In fantasy we typically think of elves as being tall and slender, so I figured that a short stocky elf was enough to qualify him as a "misfit of fantasy"."

I love all the different ideas you have for what might go in an Elfwood magazine! By the way, in the films of the Lord of the Rings, they had the average elf at six foot two, and the average human at five foot nine. I'm assuming the producers of the films will have combed the books to come up with that information, so Tolkien's elves are slightly taller than humans.

:-) Brian L. Husted replies: "Wow, I'm learning so much about the height of elves thanks to this drawing. I'm glad you like it, I actually had a ton of other ideas that I couldn't fit in. I may eventually do individual drawings of these characters (and the other ones I dreamed up) but right now I just can't find enough hours in the day to create artwork of all of the goofy ideas that are overflowing out of my head."

Well, what can I say that hasn't already been said? This was among my fav ideas for the Paparazzi project! I think the humor is great and you've got some really awesome ideas! (I personally love the water-breathing dragon!)

:-) Brian L. Husted replies: "Thanks, the water breathing dragon is my wife's favorite also."

So where can we buy the magazine? he he

:-) Brian L. Husted replies: "At all better fantasy magazine shops everywhere (Bifrost City, Elftown, Narnia, Middle Earth, etc.)"

I'd definitely buy this tabloid. And I love the fact you've given them all names in your description! This is brilliant!

1 Brian L. Husted replies: "Thanks, I even had names and descriptions for about a dozen more that didn't make it into the drawing."

*lol* I love the way your imagination works!

Wo-fish! *chuckle* Must be hard to swim. I just picture this big fish head with these little stick legs kicking like mad but the poor critter never really gets anywhere. Very Monty Python-ish.

Also, for some reason the pairing of a tall, thin dwarf and a short, stocky elf has great appeal. They must have some very challenging adventures in Not-Quite-The-Middle-Earth.

I also have to mention that with so much going on you did an excellent job on the layout and text.

This is funny. It just screams, "Tabloid!" And every sane person knows that tabloids are good for a laugh.
