SciFi and Fantasy Art: Exotic Elegance

It's been a long time since I did a real fantasy piece, and I've been wanting to update this gallery for a while now. :-)

This lady's appearance and adornments are inspired by Dejah Thoris and other characters from Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars novels.  I loved the descriptions of all that exotic jewelry and ornamentation.  It gave me a lot of freedom to make up some really out-of-the-ordinary designs, along with the Art Nouveau look.  But, this wasn't intended to be fan art, so I added details to set her apart from the Barsoom characters -- hence the pointed Elf ears.  In fact, I also thought of giving this piece an alternate title: Elvish Elegance.

This drawing was created using a combination of technical pens and brushwork.

Also, if you're interested, there's a Work in Progress posted in the Sketches and Concepts section of my blog, with all the stages of this drawing from pencil sketch to finished inks. :)

Hope you enjoy it!

Of cource I enjoy it! You’ve done it - your elf is really beautiful. You not only tryed - you got it! And, you know, I think that elven women are feminine and sexy. I am glad to see that you agree with me.

She is gorgeaous 2 a good job indeed 1. She’s very beautiful 2, but i do admit that i don’t like her face 2.

:-) B.B. Richardson replies: "Thanks for the compliment, I appreciate it! 1 I’m sorry her face was unimpressive to you, though. Is it her facial features themselves that bother you, or the string of beads across her nose? (Just asking out of curiosity. 2 )"

the beads seem like a necessary item in order to express her persona but what i don’t like is the curve of the forehead connecting with the nose and mouth. Maybe if you did her head to look a little 3d it would have been great 2

:-) B.B. Richardson replies: "OK, I think I see what you mean there. Thanks for the compliment and the constructive hint. 2 Are you saying it might look better with a little extra shading to make the full shape of her head stand out? Maybe some shading around her eyebrows, or her cheeks perhaps? 2"

i don’t think extra shading, the shading in this picture is good for the style in use, but just turn her head towards the viewer, showing a little of the left eye (the one who isn’t showing at all) and reduce the big curve of the forehead with a more natural smaller curved one 2 i think that should do it 1

I really like the lines and graphic borders.
