SciFi and Fantasy Art: The Raven

This painting is for a book cover to be published by Imaginary Worlds Press. The book is a horror novel, and we wanted to do something 'chilly' for the cover that featured a crow or raven, and some little icons from the book. The story has many references to nursery rhymes that we all know, featuring predominantly The House that Jack Built, so in the corners we have a wee little cat, and a rat, and a cauldron and pie. All these have significance to the story. Mainly I wanted to do a very wintery feeling painting, and then the idea for the raven on his branch, berries and a few drops of blood about, and the knotwork branches around him in the border came to me. It was perfect! Prints of this painting are available from the Gift Shop in my personal site! This is really lovely. 2 What book is it? I'd like to find myself a copy, to see if it's as cool as its cover.

A lovely piece. The berry in the Raven's mouth drew my eye first and seemed almost to distract me from taking the picture as a whole, as the bold red between the beak stands out so much from the Raven itself. Then I noticed that it seemed to create an eye, one that was looking directly at me, and I had to grin. Intentional or not on your part, it was a pleasing effect.

And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting... on the pallid bust of Pallus just above my chamber door...

Normally I like my ravens more foreboding and mystical, but ones decorated with cherry pie apparantly suit as well!
