Quite a long time ago (about 2000 years, in fact), there was a king who ruled a rather wet kingdom. So wet in fact, that people lived alongside the proverbial paddling frogs in harmony. They were also dirt poor. Aside from that, there was a short of fresh water in the kingdom, while salt water was...(shall I, or shall I not make a pun here? Why the heck not!). They were swimming in salt water. While in the midst of a heat fever, he decided to send his three daughters out to find fresh water where all of the highly expert water-hunters had failed. So, the three girls set out. Almost immediately they get separated. The eldest trips over a frog in the mud. The frog looks up at her and croaks:
'If you will be my darling, I'll give you all the fresh water you can drink....'
Don't ask me why he can speak. I don't know. Quite sensibly, the princess tells him to get lost. Somewhere else...quite possibly a league south of that place, the middle princess trips over a frog. The frog asks her to be his fiance, with possibility of breaking off the engagement if it didn't work out. She thought she was just in the throes of heat-fever and didn't bother answering.
The third princess was quite a bit weaker than her sisters, and agrees to the frog. The frog gives her a really big pitcher of water to drink that never goes dry and she dashes off. The frog holds on to the hem of her dress, and so the king sees him, and takes his daughter to account...the daughter tries to murder the frog (well, technically it's not murder, but....), and he turns into a prince just in time to save himself.
