SciFi and Fantasy Art: Elven Evenstar: Arwen Undómiel

January 2003. This is my portrayal of Arwen Undómiel from J.R.R. Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy. When I started this painting, I didn't know what aspect of Arwen's personality would rise to the surface; now, I think the result of my efforts is a pre-War-of-the-Ring Arwen. Perhaps it's Arwen as she was when Aragorn first met her: mysterious yet carefree, and somehow a bit playful. I hope that in the picture below, you can tell that the background consists of golden Lothlorien, and mountains on the horizon.

I suspect that I'll get a lot of comments saying, 'This isn't Arwen! Blah blah blah...' Well, people are certainly entitled to their opinions. ;o) I was a bit surprised myself to see this Arwen staring back at me from the canvas...But here she is, and I like her. She speaks to me.

My model for this pic was my friend Kendra, who didn't even know she was modeling. ;o) I painted this from a photo taken by our mutual friend Mario (photo used by permission). The painting is a gift to Kendra, and its purpose is trifold (ooh, a big word!): birthday, congrats on completion of a major project, and early congrats on completion of her Abitur in a few months. GO KENDRA!!!

This is actually a digital photo of the painting, because the paint isn't dry as of now. ;o) But as soon as it's dry, I'll try to get a good scan of it. Oil on canvas, 30cm x 40 cm.

I didn't actually think it was Arwen when I first looked at it because I thought of Liv Tyler as Arwen.I thought you were trying to draw her before I clicked on it.But now that I think of it this must be YOUR vision of Arwen and not Peter Jackson's.I must say this is a GREAT piece of artwork.Just fabolous!(I am a big LOTR freak so...)

Absolutely love LOTR so I like this picture. I know that others have said this but I really love the sheer fabric! God, I wish I could do that!!!!

This is pretty good but yeah its not really how I imagined Arwen but its obviously the way you imagined her so I won't complain. Shes closer to my idea of Arwen then the movie though I must admit. She has a child like quality that I imagined for Arwen which is good. Since Shes an elf it just seemed to make sense that She'd look so young. The dark hair and pale skin is good too. I really love the cloak too. I really like the colour and I really do think that your a very artist although its not my idea of Arwen.

This is great you took a character and gave her live.

I thought a lot about this one here and now I think, you have truly cached Arwens character, although she does not look the way I imagined her.
Great work, my favorite of your pics.

OoOoOoOooooooo!!!! The detail, and the colors of her fine elven silks are divine! Her emotions and half hiding her face brought a smile too!

Oh wow...the cloth is just amazing. Great work. She seems very human to me, so perhaps not my vision of Arwen...but then, my vision of Arwen will never grace paper as fabulously as yours has, so more power to you
1 Absolutely amazing work with the colors. I'm still stunned.

Wow... Really pretty, really really pretty. You've done a great job! I like that fact that you haven't tried to draw Liv Tyler as Arwen and done your own interpretation. Very nice, very original.

O môr henion i dhu: ely siriar, el síla. Ai! Aníron Undómiel.

:-) Courtney Weger Cantrell replies: "If only I knew how to reply in Elvish! ;o) Thanks for commenting on my work. I didn't want to draw Liv Tyler, partly because that would require me to open a Fanart gallery here, I'm not interested in that. It's always more fun to do my own interpretation. 19)"

She looks like my older sister. And not my idea of Arwen at all. But still awweeesssooommmeeee.

:-) Courtney Weger Cantrell replies: "I appreciate it that you enjoy the picture even though it doesn't reflect your own imaginings. Thanks for commenting!"
