SciFi and Fantasy Art: Frog and Princess for MandyOct. 4, 2001 -- I painted this one as a gift for my friend Mandy. It was for her birthday January 2001--I finished it in July 2001. Ah, the life of the procrastinator... ;) Mandy loves frogs, hence the subject of this piece. Our friend Dennis did an excellent job of framing it, and it now hangs in Mandy's livingroom, where it looks quite sophisticated. ;) I consider this my best painting so far. The scan doesn't quite do it justice. Oil paint on canvas, 16 inches x 20 inches.Uploaded better quality pic October 2003.

But then again, if this follows the story, it just adds to the picture. Or, she's just bored. I'm not quite sure). She has a nice dress, so I guess I'll just have to congatulate you on the job, picture you have mastered. Congrats! ^_^ Courtney Weger Cantrell replies: "Well, according to the story, the princess *was* quite arrogant, refusing to help the poor frog in any way. I wasn't necessarily trying to portray her as arrogant, but if she seems that way, it's okay with me. ;o) Thanks for your kind words, Riikka."

| 22 Dec 2002 | Jennifer A. Wrynn | Oohh wow yeah I like your work a lot especially this one. Its so surreal and the woman is so detailed and the colors are cool the way they don't really look natural and this painting just has something about it i like. Courtney Weger Cantrell replies: "Well, thank you Jennifer! I'm very glad you enjoyed the pic. Thanks for the visit!" | |
| 10 Jan 2003 | Sam King | Hey, this is great. The contersting colours work well, and the lady is very well done. Iv never tried oil- they seem a bit intimidating (and expensive). Do you think they are better than watercolurs? Great stuff anyhow. Cheers. Courtney Weger Cantrell replies: "Thanks, Sam! Glad you dropped by. And if you're interested in trying oils, my advice is...go for it! They intimidated me at first, too--but I find the best way to learn to ride a dragon is just to climb aboard and do it. ;o) I think oils are huge fun. And for me, they're better than watercolors. The last time I tried using watercolors, it was a disaster. Of course, that was a long time ago, so maybe I should try again! ;o) At any rate, one of my favorite things about oils is that they take so long to dry, So when I make a mistake, I have plenty of time to go back and fix it. I love that! ;o)" | |
| 1 Mar 2003 | Steph Salt | Why have we only just got to see this Courtney? It's absolutely wonderful I love the frog and the princess looks like a godess. I like the red frame as well, it looks like Chinese red laquer. | |
| 5 Apr 2003 | Sabrina M. E. Seltenreich | Very original use of colors. I also like the elegant way the princess stands there... Oh and i always imagined the frog to be very big and i like the fact that he doesnt wear a crown, like in so many illustrations. | |
| 1 Jul 2003 | Goo Goo Shell | I love this painting! If I could I'd buy it myself!! LOL I love the leaves on the trees, the landscape is beautiful, the details, especially on the woman and her dress, are amazing... and as a frog-fanatic I love the frog. I think it's a wonderful picture. | |
| 19 Sep 2003 | Lys | You have yet to shock me! Your artwork is amazing! Never let anyone tell you different! | |
| 4 Nov 2003 | Navah Rosensweig | This is lovely. I love the colors of the trees and landscape, and the swirl of the princess's skirt is perfect. I love how contrasted she is to the rest of the landscape, in her aqua blue. The frog is nicely done, too. | |
| 8 Mar 2004 | Leia Anne Getty | Excellent color scheme. Heh, I always imagined the frog from the fairy tale to be small, but this is somewhat suiting. | |
