SciFi and Fantasy Art: Griff

This is a griffon I sketched recently. It was just a simple pencil sketch. I had been doing some sketches of eagles and he just sort of emerged. These never seem to scan well. Any suggestions?

Did you do this in charcoal? I LOVE the texture, and the eye. Why the purple glow? (not that I don't like it, mind you).
Nah, charcoal is soooo messy. This was done with a brown ochre drawing pencil but it was scanned greyscale. I was going for the charcoal look though when I was fiddling with the filters in photoshop. And why purple?......'cos I did the other one in blue of course.
