| 26 Aug 2003 | Kristina 'Ruskou' Pochtaryuk | Ohh, *first comment dance* haha, i love this picture. Overall, I love your work. I am amermaid freak and you are one of the best peopleI've ever seen, Keep it up Daniel A. Cortopassi replies: "Thanks very much!" | |
| 13 Mar 2004 | Scott Collins | You kinda can tell that the girl is a photograph, it looks a little unnatural the way she's melded to the lower half. Other than that it looks great though, all your work is really awesome! Daniel A. Cortopassi replies: "Thanks. I suppose I could have run the scales a bit further up her middle, but overall I like how this came out. For mermaids with scales the transition from skin to scales is always a question. I guess until I finally meet a real mermaid I'll have to keep using my best judgment. I tend to prefer a smoother blend over a hard line. I never did get the point of the little frilly thing some mermaids have around the waist (like Ariel)." | |
| 14 May 2004 | Sarah 'Starstruck' Taylor | HOLY O.O That ocean...oh my gosh....there are no words And the scales! Shite man, how on Earth!? *bookmarks* Daniel A. Cortopassi replies: "Thanks very much! The ocean was just a lot of work. I used a lot of photos of the ocean as a reference, and just kept adding detail until I got it as photo-like as I thought I could. In general when I do a photomanip like this, I am trying to make the background and drawn parts match the photo in terms of light quality and graininess. I use Photoshop's film grain filter to give the drawn parts a bit of grain, or else they look too smooth. For the scales I made a seamless grayscale scale pattern and used it with Photoshop's pattern stamp to overlay a bit of texture onto the tail. Then I went over it by hand to touch up and detail certain spots. It was also a lot of work, but I'm pretty happy with the result. As far as my own art goes, this is one of my favorites." | |
| 17 Aug 2004 | Katie A. O'Gorman | Amazing picture, the photo areas and the drawn are blended so well that it just looks so natural. The only thing I can point out is the area between her thumb and first finger on her right hand, should be darker? Daniel A. Cortopassi replies: "Thanks! The stuff between her fingers is supposed to be webbing, though it was hard with her hands positioned the way they were to get that across." | |
| 14 Jan 2006 | Krista D. Kennell | I really like how she looks asian, you dont get much of that around here Daniel A. Cortopassi replies: "Yes, I've heard comments about that elsewhere, that most fantasy characters are white. In this case it's because the model is Asian, but I think I may try doing some more pictures with people of various ethnicities." | |
