SciFi and Fantasy Art: Royal Purple

This mermaid was inspired by a character I've had in my head who is a minor deity, the goddess of merfolk. This isn't exactly how I pictured my mer- goddess, but I like it anyway.

The mermaid was done in Poser, and everything else was done in Photoshop 7 with the help of my Wacom tablet. This turned into a good practice piece for water and rock painting.

I really love the background. It is exceptional! Especially the water. The water is just perfect! I do not like the girl though, its not you! It's just, I don't like the hard 3D poser look, to me it seems so stiff. I also think her tail is too thin where it would be her thighs and hips. I hate to say that, b/c you are a good artist, but hey, this is what Elfwood is for right? I DO like the finn and the scales. And I like the girl overall, excpet for that fore mentioned stiffness. I hope I didn't make you feel bad because this is a great piece of art! 2

The water is excellent. It's very difficult getting water to look like you want it to but I think that you've captured it quite well. Now, the pelvic region is a bit odd. If she's a mermaid, why would she have prominent legs? Just a question. And the tail looks a bit long and kinda too rubbery. Just my opinion. Other than that, it's a great pic!

Hey thats really really cool!! ^.^ It looks so real... *grins* And the gills are just full of awesomeness. ^.~ Kudos to you!

I love the waves breaking on the shore they are very realistic looking, but the memaids tail does look rather thin towards her hips. I see you have created her gills over her ribs, thats just what I have done with my mermaid, she is waiting for the mods right now 2

Again that awsome tail..
I WANT THAT TAIL!!!

Anyway.. It's great. Her hair looks so soft.... and the background is simply amazing!! How did you do that water, it looks so real!!!! I am truly impressed.
Beautiful, a deserved Mod's Choice =D

You did that sea water in photoshop? Wow, it's so realistic! Your mermaid is beautiful, but I love the way you achived the landcape best of all.

Very nice landscape, that water is phenomenal! The rocks and everything are great too, but I'm especially in love with the water 19) How come you didn't do the mermaid in photoshop too? You obviously have the skill! Poser figures have a tendency of looking rather "pasted on" when put with hand-painted backgrounds, though I must say that poser mermaid is more natural looking than most I've seen 19) Very cool 19)

I just cannot believe how realistic the water and the sand and the rocks are...you are SO talented! Keep it up! (I like the mermaid too, by the way)! I also agree with the above commenter that said that you should try to to the mermaid in Photoshop. Either way, though, this is an awesome picture and I absoulutely love it! You really deserved the Mod's!

:-) Daniel A. Cortopassi replies: "Thanks! Honestly these days I am using mostly colored pencils, so I do the entire piece by hand. I am not really into doing Poser art anymore, but this one got Mod's so I left it in here."
