SciFi and Fantasy Art: Creature Skull

An unfinished work done a couple of years ago. The original was done in graphite pencil and the creature and chain link colorized (partially) in Photoshop. The skull was originally done first and the creature added afterwards.

There are so many things about this picture that scream about how good an artist you are. The muscle structure in the creatures legs are one, the veinlike cracks in the skull, the construction of both the skull and the creatures head- I can see the creatures own skull through it's skin, you don't just draw lines, you draw flesh and bones into them.

Since the last comment so well addressed the artistic technique in this picture, I will adress the mood. I must say i like the skull better. The little creature could be darker or more lizardlike to fit the mood, or more whimsical to show a contrast. At any rate, it would look better if it didnt resemble a little kid in a hockey helmet. I must agree that the drawing is very well done. Maybe try the skull again with something different in it?
