SciFi and Fantasy Art: The Old Man from Hottentot.

I have this thing for drawing old people. Hopefully it's not a fetish or something Freudian. It was also because I was afraid my ability to draw 'realistic' people (as apposed to 'comic-booky') was wanning.

Well done, I would have made his nose a little rounder or larger but then that is just my own preference. The shading here is well applied and I am especially fond of the hair.

Great picture! I really like the detail it, and the wrinkles around the eyes....basicly, this pic rox!!

The one thing I don't like is the title. Hottentot was a name whites used to call blacks in South Africa. Its a lot like the n-word here. If you changed it, then this picture would be great...

Excellent characterization! And don't worry about a fetish or something like that...DaVinci loved to draw old an ugly people. He thought that there was no challenge in drawing a hansome or beautiful person and ugly/old people were much more interesting subjects. So, ya know, Leonardo is pretty decent company to be in with...

don't be ashamed of drawing old people ^_^ your excellent at it.
The subject allows you to use all those wrinkly details, which you are awsome at. I'd much rather look at all the minute details, the shadows and lines of a flawed face than stare at images which used a magazine model for the subject.

I love the detail level in this. It's simple and yet.. Not... If that makes any sense O.o

Dont worry about the fetish thing i found the winkles work as a grid for me so when i try and draw young myself i get real lost but i have to admit i am not as good as you he looks lovely

I like drawing old men too!! But I also have a natural skill with drawing women, and I definatly dont want that to be a fetish or anything Freudian. Dont let the power of suggestion send you into therapy trying to analize your "subconcience" to death! REMEMBER ITS STILL ONLY A THEORY!...sorry, I babble, but similar thoughts have really bothered me. But Im sure you were no where near as seriouse as my response.

Im sure you just have an appreciation for the detail in an old mans face, alot more I think would go into it than a young man. Anyhoo its really good!

This a cool drawing, u r my new hero (right up there with Simon Bisley) I live in South Africa, and Hottentots were/are actually a race of people and its not a derrogatory word at all. Youve captured this guy perfectly. All your other work just plain rocks
