SciFi and Fantasy Art: Elves

August 31, 2005 Acrylic paints, Flair pen, and liquid leaf on parchment. Tiny Elves reside in the vinework surrounding this initial 'E,' which begins the word 'Elves.' The initial is done in a style that was popular in illumated documents, particularly religious texts, in England's 12th century. I had it in my mind to draw a cover for a book when I designed this, though I've yet to write or find a book on Elves to go with it. For now, my little friends will just have to frolic among the flowers for a while.

This picture is now available on clothing, posters, mugs, mouse pads, and other great items at my online store. I hope you'll check it out!

*bouncing up and down in excited first comment dance* Yay! Proper illuminations in the woods! It's absolutely stunning. How big is the original?

2 Debbie Palmer replies: "Thank you! The original is just 8.5 x 11. I limit myself to that most of the time, or things don't fit in my scanner. I expect to have more illuminations coming, as soon as I finish the series of elves I'm working on now. (At least a few of those will be uploaded to Elfwood soon.)"

Let me repeat myself and say again that the designs are awesome. 2
I especially like the some sort of shinyness effect. That definitely makes it stand out, and besides, shiny things are cool. XD

Excuse me while I drip some excess sugar around the gallery...

2 Debbie Palmer replies: "Thanks Vel! I'm really pleased that you like it. Some of the shininess is gold liquid leaf, but it loses a lot of its shine in the scanning. I think the shiny effect you're getting is from the white highlights, that are an integral part of designs of this style from this period. Either way, you're right: shiny things are cool. 2

Have fun dripping sugar! LOL"

Awesome work! I can never put detail where I want it, and you did just great with the details in this! I love the white highlighting, it makes the word and pictures that are a part of it stand out really well. Kudos to you!

2 Debbie Palmer replies: "Thank you! The whitework can be a pain to get right, but it really makes the difference. Thanks for noticing!"

This is absolutely beautiful. I've always wanted to be able to draw these illuminated capitals, but i can't so i just admire you.

2 Debbie Palmer replies: "Thank you!"

Your illuminated letters caught my eye... makes me want to give it a try! I find this one to be especially fantastic! I love the details!! All the little elves hanging out.... I wanna join them!

2 Debbie Palmer replies: "Thanks! I hope you do give it a try, and enjoy it. The letters take a little practice, but they're worth the effort. Check out some medieval texts online or at the library for ideas on how to lay everything out, then let your imagination take over the details. I have a lot of fun with it."

Very unique... I had to stare at it for awhile in order to take it all in. I really like it though.
