SciFi and Fantasy Art: Legacy Green Dragon This dragon appears in the lower left corner of the Grand Champion Legacy Scroll I created for the Black Prince's Birthday Event, held in the Barony of Black Diamond, Kingdom of Atlantia, SCA. The original scroll, which appears in the inset, is 19.5x25.5 inches, drawn in black ink, painted with acrylics, and finished with several layers of gold foil. The detail measures approximately 6.5x7 inches. I had some fun with this dragon, making him a bit different from my usual dragons. Since many dragons found on period scrolls appear a bit wolfish, especially in the faces and feet, I decided to give my dragon a bit of fur. His belly and hindquarters are shaggy, while the rest of him is fairly scaly. The white detailing on the picture is an artistic style found in the majority of medieval European manuscripts, especially those of England and France. Sadly, the gold foil scans even worse than the gold paint and liquid gold leaf I've used in the past, resulting in the appearance of black spots. The original glimmers with the gold foil, and is far more attractive than the results I've had from paint or liquid leaf. | |
 | | | | | Date | Name | Comment | | | 22 Jun 2006 | Simi Landau *Muffin Queen* | Ooh, that's great. I love the flowers swirling around him, they make a wonderful border. Sorry about the bad scan...I imagined it with the gold, and it's got to look amazing. Congrats on Mod's Choice! Debbie Palmer replies: "Thank you! I'm glad you like it! Our Princess took some good pictures of it last month, and I'm hoping I can use one in place of the original photo. If so, I'll clean up the inset on the picture and resubmit it, so you can see better. At least the details were able to scan well, aside from the gold (which NEVER scans well)." | |
| 22 Jun 2006 | Runne of Whytehurst Abbey | Holy crud! THAT'S AWESOME!! I am sad that i can't see it for real sometime! I live in An Tir, btw. Maybe my Abbey can start making kewl stuff like that for our Royalty soon... Debbie Palmer replies: "Thank you! I'm glad you like it! *grins* Are you very far? I'm in VA. Maybe you can see it in person, as it will be touring per Her Highness's request. By all means get your scribes to make pretty stuff! THe Royals and populace all love it!" | |
| 22 Jun 2006 | Kristin A. Erickson | Great job on details and congrats! Debbie Palmer replies: "Thank you!" | |
| 22 Jun 2006 | Danielle Scott | Lovely!!! But I already know your work is gorgeous! Congrats on Mods Choice!!! Debbie Palmer replies: "Thank you, M'Lady! *hugs* I'm hoping you'll get to see the real thing sometime soon. Her Highness has asked that we make sure the Legacy Scroll travels to any event anyone in our family goes to over the next year. It's been to a few already. I just have to fix Duke Logan's name on it, as it was given to me incorrectly after the event last month. Her Highness took a bunch of pictures of it, too, which may be available somewhere." | |
| 22 Jun 2006 | Angela Perry | *waves to a fellow SCAdian* Beautiful scroll! His Highness is very lucky to have someone with your talent around Debbie Palmer replies: "Thank you, M'Lady! *waves back* Oh, the Black Prince isn't an SCA persona, it refers to Edward, the Black Prince of Wales, in the 14th century. Our Barony has an annual event to celebrate his birthday. Are you in or near Atlantia? You might get to see the real thing. I'm glad you dropped by!" | |
| 23 Jun 2006 | Julia | Amazing! Intricate and brilliant. I wish I could see the one with the foil. And that dragon reminds me of Kit from the Immortals series. Debbie Palmer replies: "Thank you! I'm glad you like it! I'm not familiar with the Immortals series, but I think I'll take your comment as a compliment. *Smiles* I did have fun creating this dragon. There are more limitations in creating a medieval-style dragon than in creating a general dragon, but the limitations make the challenge of it that much more fun." | |
| 30 Oct 2006 | em | Awesome Dragon. Can I take him home with me? Pretty please with a cherry on top? Debbie Palmer replies: "Thank you!" | |
| 7 Dec 2006 | Shelz Keast | Cool! Again, amazing detail. Shame the gold doesn't show well it must be stunning. Debbie Palmer replies: "Thanks! I really wish you could see the gold properly. It makes all the difference." | |
| 2 Oct 2007 | Angelica Cramer | This is an excellent example of an Illumination!! It's wonderful ^^ | |
| 29 Dec 2007 | Emily P. Peirone | A well deserved mods choice! (I still want to take the dragon with the fuzzy belly home) | |
