To answer your question I think I'd have to group certian things together and analyze.

Chi blasts enegy is usualy thought of as spiritual energy that one calls from within.

Laserblasts or Light flashe characters can have many reasons on how they generate.Some got into an accident (chemicals,electrics,or other causes) and have been able to fire blasts ever since. The ones who were born with it though (mutants) probably use there emotions as the charge to fire of these powers, notice most are in battle when doing so, and it's been said that anger can be explosive at times, I think comic characters take it to the extreme though.
