SciFi and Fantasy Art: Roan

He does not suffer mortals to intrude upon his sacred grove... and that horn's not just for show. I hope you can run faster than Light....

Somewhat inspired by Meredith Ann Pierce's Firebringer trilogy, with its unicorns of myriad colors and characters.

Polymer clay, acrylic paint, soapstone base.

Oh gosh, this work looks professional! I like his expression very much, his eyes look angry and dangerous, and his color is marvelous! He is beautiful! now I have to see the rest of your gallery - see ya!

:-) Erin ´EireWolf´ Metcalf replies: "Wonderful, thank you! I was trying for the dangerous look; I'm glad I succeeded. I wanted to make a unicorn that wasn't the typical white and wimpy kind. Thank you very much for commenting. And now I shall go tour YOUR gallery! ^_^"

I must say it definatly looks pretty awesome. Somehow puts me in mind of one of the Scouts of Halla as they went rampaging down the hill in that last battle. Must be the expression on his face, which is priceless. Wouldn't want to meet him in an alley at night, thats for sure. I love your other work but I think this is my favorite. ^^

:-) Erin ´EireWolf´ Metcalf replies: "Thanks very much, Angela! That is a high compliment indeed. I will be doing more unicorns in the future, so please come back someday! ^_^"

I agree, the expression is marvelous. Makes me wanna talk like a pirate. I like the horn especially well, too; it looks savage, and pristine, and goes with the fierce eyes.

:-) Erin ´EireWolf´ Metcalf replies: "Aaarr! Thanks, matey! ^_~ I was going for savage and pristine ferocity, so I'm glad it came through."

Gorgeous! Excellent choice of colors! Love the redness. And the way he's mounted on a stone brings about a good effect! Good work!

:-) Erin ´EireWolf´ Metcalf replies: "Thanks very much! I plan to do a full-body unicorn someday soon. The colors especially were inspired by the Firebringer trilogy."

Even though it must be a deadly thing and you only have the head worked out, I wouldn't mind sitting up on this fellow, if it had a body. Though, that horn: the way you have it curved and edged about the middles I'm fairly sure you wouldn't want to be stabbed with it over a usual unicorn's spiraled horn. That might even get stuck in your back, eh heh. But if you have to run as fast as light I'm sure he'd be strong enough to fling you off to your grave. Lots of blood to drink, too. In fact the color reminds me of it ^_^ Again I wish I could do something like you have : - P

:-) Erin ´EireWolf´ Metcalf replies: "He doesn't drink blood, but all the same I don't think you want to try and ride him. ^__^ Thanks for all your comments."

It IS reminiscent of Oro, if that's the correct Scout of Halla. Beautiful job on everything from expression, porportion to color choice (that cold blue eye is striking indeed; looks just as sharp as the horn).

And then, on a totally pathetic note, it's making me think of the first pony I ever rode, a dark red roan named Shorty. He was mean too. But he never would have looked that good in sculpture.

:-) Erin ´EireWolf´ Metcalf replies: "Ponies do have a reputation for orneriness. As I recall, at least 2 that I rode in my childhood had a fondness for bucking novices. It was sort of their hobby. ^_^ Thank you for your wonderful comments, especially about his eye. I was going for a piercing coldness. By the way, I like your gallery. Your bio is especially amusing. ^_^"

Another Firebringer reader! Haha! I thought they'd all died out... I used to own a Firebringer role-playing site, you know. It died pretty quickly though. Two people left, then one deleted himself without warning and the other never posted. 0.o I deleted the site.

And I ramble again. Very nice, especially the expression. I love the "beard" and the horn. One thing I would love to see is one made with faux fur, or with fur texturing. If you used texturing on this one, I'd like to see a close-up! Very nice work, as always.

:-) Erin ´EireWolf´ Metcalf replies: "Thank you! Yes, I love the Firebringer series. For the longest time, as a kid, I only had the first book. Didn't even occur to me that it might be a trilogy. So I finished the series as an adult.I've never used faux fur before; I may have to try that one of these days. The texturing on this piece is mainly visual, done by layering the paint with a tiny sponge. "

Can I use this in my Firebringer tour?
