SciFi and Fantasy Art: Dragon Snail 10 - Nyoka

"Nyoka" is #10 in the Dragon Snail™ series. One of a rare hornless subspecies of Dragon Snail™, Nyoka resembles a serpent in facial structure and markings. (His name is the Swahili word for "serpent.") His yellow body is mottled with brownish-orange dorsal markings, which are complemented by his pale brown and white shell. He stands 2.5 inches (6.35 cm) tall and 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) long.

Polymer clay and real seashell.

Somehow, he makes me think of a giraffe more than a dragon... but he's still neat. 2

:-) Erin ´EireWolf´ Metcalf replies: "Yes, he is marked rather giraffishly, isn't he? 2 His face is a little snakelike, though, which is kinda' hard to see from this angle. Thanks for the comment!"

Wow, you have amazing skills! This is so beautiful! I have tried a few times to do something like that and well... it didn't end up so well =S Anyway, enough of my mistakes. It's adorable and I hope you'll keep it up ^_^

:-) Erin ´EireWolf´ Metcalf replies: "Thanks so much, Lómiodien! I hope you don't give up, if you want to sculpt! Sometimes it takes a while to get the hang of it, or maybe you could try a different medium. Some are more difficult than others."

The smoothness of this snail really helps sell the sense of reality 2 I've probably asked this before, but how is that achieved with clay?

~ Esther

:-) Erin ´EireWolf´ Metcalf replies: "A few different things factor into his smoothness. First, I didn't paint him (which would leave a texture, however miniscule), but the colors are in the clay itself. I sort of did an inlay with colored clays and smoothed the 2 colors into each other. Then I just kept smoothing the surface, usually with my fingers (because fingerprints generally look more natural than toolmarks). Finally, he's finished with a gloss varnish."

That's adorable. I wish I had those in my backyard!

He looks like he's going to bite your finger...

1 Erin ´EireWolf´ Metcalf replies: "He almost did! I had to put him down right quick... "

I looooooooove the colours of this one2!!! So nice... How do you coloured him?

:-) Erin ´EireWolf´ Metcalf replies: "Thanks! I used colored clays and blended the edges of the spots."
