SciFi and Fantasy Art: Maiden

This is the Maiden aspect in my Archetypal Triple Goddess series. I was mainly thinking of Bast and Artemis/Diana while drawing this. The Maiden personifies independence, curiosity, wonder, strength, fearlessness, wild things, and the hunt. She brings a refreshing sense of newness with Her wherever she goes. She is looking with interest at a crystal ball displaying the wild woods which are her domain. The stars symbolize hope, and the waxing cresent new beginnings. The cat perched on the moon symbolizes magic and independence. This is drawn entirely in pencil.

I said on your main page that I was doing a peice on you in my art class: this was one of the pictures I wrote about. Incase you are intrested here is what I said:

"The picture on the bottom of the opposite page is one third of a trio of paintings depicting the archetypal three Mother Godesses, not unusual for this artist who gets a lot of inspiration from World Mythology. It is titled 'Maiden' and is based on Bast and Artemis. It is drawn and coloured completely in pencil, in contrast to the mix of marker pens and pencils the artist usually uses. It is a culumnation of several symbols associated with the personality of the Godess. It contains stars for hope, a cat for magic and independence and a waxing cresent moon to symbolise new begginings. The artists style of drawing people undeniably derives from the popular modern Japenese stlye of drawing cartoons: manga. However, what I really admire about this artist is her use of expressonistic colour shaded in with the skin to give atmosphere and mood to the character and the use of shading and toning to create a shiny or touchable effect. I enjoy the bright contrasting colours and defining black lines. I like the dark blue and indigo shading around the eyes because it draws your eyes to hers, emphasising her intense concerntration on the crystal ball. I like the light and multicoloured shading around the cat and moon, giving the picture a ethereal quality, the curl of hair on her cheek is an eccelent composition idea, when the picture is looked at from a distance the three curves of the moon, ball and hair give the picture order. The spots of yellow in the trees, flowers and moon glow lend a warmth to an otherwise cold picture. "
