SciFi and Fantasy Art: The Thorn of Arkane

Once upon a time the kingdom of Arkane was a land of enlightenment and magic beyond any others in Algoron. It was a center of learning that grew from the forested frontiers of the world. Respect to nature, science, and mysticism was given above all else. The leaders were able diplomats, and kept no standing army on their land. The king’s intentions were clear only to himself and other scientists and mystics who wished to live and learn in peace. Soon the riddle of a magical city with no army or desires for war was unbearable to the evil kingdom to the north. The evil queen sent an army and her powerful legion of the black knights of Eclipse to conquer and destroy the magical place. Seeing the folly too late, the High Mystic and advisor to the royal family of Arkane placed the only defense upon Arkane she could devise: a curse. A curse of undefined and enigmatic power; not unlike the kingdom itself. Arkane was conquered and ravished by the forces of evil, and has for many years since felt the rule of many hands: lords, ladies, despots, conquerors, good and evil. Each have ruled in turn for their own reasons and dreams, but in the end great misery and doom falls upon them. Like a great tree, rotten within, Arkane awaits the time when 'one with the wisdom of the woods' will rise to cure it. This picture illustrates the story that was written about laying the curse of Arkane. One of my favorite little bits of obscure Dark and Shattered Lands history. The privilege of playing a MUD since day one, eh? Drawn with pencil on parchment paper, I haven't decided how I'll color this yet. For now its just a nice pencil drawing.

I thought the four circles stood for Thunder (at the top), Fire (at the right), Ice (and the bottom) and Water (at the left). Is that it? And very very nice picture! ^_^

Hey, Jess! Really nice piece! Rather intrueging feeling you captured there. I played Dark and Shattered Lands for a while (since a friend of mine plays it), but I still stick to my Genesis hahah. Either way, good going ^-^

This picture is really great!
I like this mystic atmosphere and your technique is very good. But one question: Do the circles stand for the four elements; below the earth, on the right the fire, on the left the water, and above (with a swastika?) the air?

:-) Jess Freeman replies: "Thanks, I'm glad you like it. In answer to your question, yes the symbols are repesentive of the elements. Lightning falls under 'air' in this universe, so it was the inspiration for the air symbol."

That was speaking of the Verminasian conquering of Arkane before the Marauders scared the stinky Vermies back to their homefront, yes? I wasn't around back then, but I've read the history of Arkane (biased of couse, we're still waiting for an unbiased account of the History of Arkane) anyway, very interesting pic <3
