Dec 9 2003 (revamped version)

I remember reading Terry Pratchett’s “Carpe Jugulum” a while ago, in that book it said that when a phoenix hatches it takes the form of the first bird it sees.
That got me thinking; what if the first be-winged creature it saw was not exactly a regular bird?
In this drawing I tried to capture the phoenix as it is rising from the ashes in a fiery inferno.

Updated version:
I have always like the concept of this image. But for a long time it has been anoying me because it was so old and the technique was pretty horrible, I remember one commenter comparing the wings to a liver. *lol*
I've been thinking of a revamp for a long time but wings are not easy for me to draw so I've been putting it off.
A special thanks to Raven for finally inspiring me to finally give it a go.

Old version can be found (and laughed at) HERE.

Mediums: Mechanical pencil, Photoshop & mouse.

As a fellow artist I would just like to give you a mass kudos... I am only a junior in high school, but I'm known by EVERYONE there, and even many MANY people at other nearby schools for my "amazing artistic ability"... If you would be so kind as to visit my site sometime it would truly mean a lot. You are a complete ANIMAL [pun intended, of course 2 ] I happen to be a BIG fan of anything and everything that has to do with FIRE, and with that in mind, I must say that you are definately someone who's level talent and skill I will truly aspire to reach someday.

:-) Annika Freyah Nilsen replies: "Glad ya like this lite fire thingy, and it's always nice to hear from someone famous. ^_~
Personally, I'm terrified of fire and this images background actually scare me, lol.
Unfortunatly I cant seem to view your site so I can't really do as you wish. I will try to remember to do so at a later date, maybe it's there then. ^_^"

You are definitely the 'best' at drawing fire oriented creatures (or the flame itself(or maybe herself)). I'm serious, I had never seen such marvelous pieces before I have stumbled into your gallery. I nearly broke my jaw when I saw your version of the great Phoenix. Please keep up the good work.... I'm looking forward to your next update (And please pardon my incompetence in writing... My mind wanders off when a see even a flicker of flame...)

:-) Annika Freyah Nilsen replies: "Odd that people should think so highly of my fire images when I should be really horrible at them. For here you see one who's terrified of fire, flames and even tiny sparks, lol. Have a fire alarm in every room, two fire blankets and a powder fire extinguisher... And a whole appartment filled to the brim with candles of all sorts...weeeeeiiiiird, lol."

That is one of the most amazing pictures I have ever seen in my entire life. You must have spent forever on that, so much effort must have gone into it.

:-) Annika Freyah Nilsen replies: "Hmm, technically I supose I have, There was he original image, then the revam which too a while... Not much time in one go, but little snaches of time here and there utill desired result. Of course... now I'm thinking of revamping it again, lol."

Now THAT is detail. Props Annika.
John

:-) Annika Freyah Nilsen replies: "Well, when I look at it I don't see much detail, I just see smudginess, lol. I think i stared at it for too long when I made it, because people seem to see something in this work that I do not, hahaha."

Annika! I absolutely love this picture of rising strength in a fire of life... It is amasing, with regret i couldn’t see your previous variant. I wish you to go forward and draw somthing else, not to stop only on the rennovation, lol.. I can imagine you can use your one magic wings of inspiration and draw, draw, draw, sometimes breath...lol....I wish you to have this magic all your life. With great respect, Julia
