SciFi and Fantasy Art: Manticore sketch

Originally it was supposed to be part of a five piece set I was going to do for my senior project, where I highlighted five mythylogical creatures. Ultimately, I only ended up doing the dragon, gryphon and hippocampus, but I'm working on this one currently. Though I liked how the sketch came out, I've abandoned it for the final version, and am working on something a little different.

I think it's the mouth that makes me think of the book "Where the Wild Things Are." Great sketch...wish my sketches looked half that good.

Just want to comment, I know that you got that from a book. I have the original pic. It is a good copying job tho.

:-) Laura Denise Galiffe replies: "*Whaaaaaaaat?? Ok, you could at least cite your source if you're going to say I copied something, which I didn't! This sketch was originally supposed to be for my senior project, so why would I plagarise somebody else's work. I worked on this drawing from scratch with my teachers. I didn't go to art school for four years to copy someone elses work! If anyone knows what Gryphonchiq is talking about, please tell me. I'd appreciate it. "

I'm not sure what that previous comment was about... i don't know too many books with true manticores like this one... but i think your picture is pretty cool, i've always kind of found manticores hard to picture!

That is a LOT of teeth! I like the tail and mane. Nice colour of the sketch too. Pity we wont get to see a finished version then.

:-) Laura Denise Galiffe replies: "Well, I am actually working on another version that's similar but hopefully a little more dynamic. Whether I'll actually ever finish it remains to be seen though I hope I will finish it eventually."

That is a truly beautiful specimen. And yes, it IS traditional to have a scorpion tail on a lion's body, whatever the modern artists might say. I like that the scorpiantine (real word? I doubt it) features are extended to the back and mane. Very original. The teeth in the maw remind me of some rather nasty fly-traps I've seen pictures of. WOULD not want to be eaten by that fellow, however lovely he is drawn. 2

So that's what a manticore is. A combination of a lion and a scropion. For i long time i didn't know what a manticore looked like. Thanks!
