SciFi and Fantasy Art: Daphne relaxing

This is daphne again, just relaxing on a leaf in the mid-October seas. She likes coming out here to be alone and think -- that's why her eyes are closed. I used myself as a model for her again, and I think it worked for her body. I'm still working on faces, so please comment on her face only if it's something helpful -- I know it's not perfect. I'd really like to know what you think of her body. Oh yeah, and this is the first drawing I've colored outside a computer since I was a little kid, so I could use tips on coloring, too.

Well you are very good, one thing i did notic though on her face is that she has no chin really, try to extend the chin downwards and it will probably look alot better, i hope this comment helps.

It's realy hard to give a helpfull comment on the face being that it is a small image, but I would suggest to hint at this and that with shadeing on the face than to try to detail with lines. The body looks fine and realistic (but it's allways more fun to use a model aside from yourself). The color and colors, well thats somthing that i'm working on figureing out myself and there are a couple of good articles in the FARP pages on that subject.

Her body positioning it correct. But it is a bit manlish. I would thin out her waist and make her thigh a bit more feminine looking. Otherwise, everything is fine (besides her face). The coloring is very well done, so is the leaf.

Her wings are fantastic! I also love the way you colored the leaf 2 For not coloring outside the computer in ages I think you did a splendid job. I wish I could go out to sea on a leaf 12 =D

the leaf and wings are awesome her shoulder is great...her right fingers are perfect....would like to see the right side of her hair fall as far as left side...and be careful with females not to five them too thick of a thigh or calf muscle...this was a very difficult pose and you pulled it off wonderfully esp. all the shading....only suggestion with face is profiles are VERY hard...and I respect your courage for this whole piece but if her eyes are closed I find that really darkening the eyelash line and making it a tad thicker at the very center really pops out the eyes then add shading in the same places a woman would put eyeshadow and consider how much of the lips or line seperating the lips should show at this angle....if you look at my gallery, you'll see that profiles are more difficult then head-on poses but I do still do them....either way, love this!

Thanks! If you see my other picture of her, she has huge legs there, too. As I pleaded my case there, I spend my days with track & field men and women who all have huge legs, and I was trying to mimic that athletic look. Her face, well let me just say that there's going to be a facial study in this gallery some time eventually, incorporating your advice. 2

I think you've done a great job on her body: both the colouring and the shadowing is very well done. Her face... I know I wasn't supposed to comment on it, but really, I'm amazed that you're able to draw such a magnificent body, and then draw a face that is blank and two-dimensional. Try to put in as much detail and emphasis on her face as the rest of her. I'm sure you could do it if you put your mind to it. So why not try to draw some facial studies? Just a tip. Using a model is really the best advice I can give you. It's the best way of learning.

You're right, I do need practice with faces. As soon as exams are over, I'll be doing a facial study of Daphne and another pic (a first sight of Apollo).

Uh you used yourself to model for a fairy pic? She looks kind of masculine. Maybe get one of your female friends to model for you

I love the transluscency of her wings - really gorgeous. They look almost as if they have veins pumping blood through them. I also love the leaf - green with a touch of autumn's vibrant colours on the edge.

:-) George Karl Kaufman replies: "Thank you! Those were some of the most fun parts to draw."

HOw nice to find an Elwood artist so close by. Rhode Island here also.
I like this picture greatly. I would agree on thinning the waist a bit and maybe thinning out the leg. And bringing her chin out and down a bit would nicen her up too.
The leaf is absolutely wonderful!
A few tweaks and it will be PERFECT!
